Reads like poetry, Amy - lyrical, moody, mysterious, enchanting. Great descriptive simile and metaphor - a kaleidoscope of words.
Your imagery brought back memories of running, as a child, through piles of coal awaiting steam engines' fill.

I met an artist once when I was a teenager at a party, he had a beer but was not drinking it, he told me that well the people around me who gave me mind altering substances including beer were not my friends, I asked why he was not drinking and he said, "Artistic Suicide". I am hoping that some teenagers read this poem and maybe it will steer some of the artists back to reality. but yep that is my hope.

Children grow quickly and go out into the world. The transition must be difficult for any mother to have the little ones leave the nest. That's why it's always good to keep up the communication even when communication is not forthcoming, because every once in a while, every child needs to come running back.

Oh how absolutely beautifully you have written of those feelings we Mothers the whole world over experience when our children fly the nest...
I especially love:
..." Shall I cry a new sea, for to sail the time away, and come ashore for the post..."
Great lines which say it just how it is...we are often torn in response to our feelings of 'moving on' for ourselves, and creating a new life to use our new 'freedom'...but still inextricably linked.....

Inevitable loss of memory no matter that it's ephemeral memory transiting away down some muddy-brained road. I find the fruits of loss at times myself. My mother can't remember what she did seconds ago sometimes. I keep thinking I will be there myself sometime. Oh that the muddy-brained beast should overtake us and leave us lost in such muddy gardens. Great read Amy. Bob
