A very strong state of the union message and the mess we are in. I agree with you wholeheartedly, and especially with the impact in the way that you wrote it. It hits hard, it is true, and it should not be ignored.
We need to promote and elect younger and more idealistic candidates who will not only promise to change things in government, but guarantee those promises in some way other than we having to replace them in future elections for sticking their hands in the candy jar the government provides.

You have shown us the wonder and beauty that evolution has brought to our wonderful planet. Every movement of the sun and the moon has parts of our planet adapting to the flow and rhythm over millions of years creating all the beauty that you state, dies after its annual season, but reappears when that season comes back around.
All animals including us, die, too. But our progeny lives on carry on what humans do to either preserve or destroy the beauty of our wild, wild place we live in.

Here in Houston, August will be hotter than July. They are predicting over 100° for every day for the next two weeks. An all-time record hot. Except for the most unfortunate, most of us have air conditioning. But everybody tries to get their business done in the morning.

By coincidence, I received my first hearing aids last Thursday and am finding that I'm hearing our black chinned sparrows for the first time in years. As your poem tells us, as they look out for cats and hawks, while squabbling for a place at the birdfeeder.

You gave me thought about all the people who don't have peace in this world. So many in Ukraine waiting for the next missile or bomb. And even more around the world under a war threat. So many without a home, seeking asylum where none is given. It will take more than praying to give them all sanctuary and peace.
Right now we are under a three day freeze threat. Churches have opened shelters for the elderly and disabled who do not have adequate heat to come to a warm place where there is plenty of food and drink, and, during this Christmas time, perhaps some caroling in good joy.

From a very young man I always looked up to my ancestors like you have. Remember playing checkers with my great-grandfather and sharing a card game with my great-grandmother. Always visiting great aunts and uncles after my grandparents died, listening for stories they might tell me about the way it was in their past.
For you it is very special, because so much of black history has been hidden by slaves not being considered human and not named in censuses. But the stories passed down our real and I'm glad that you are one in your lineage that is writing down what you know and passing it on to future generations. I applaud your acknowledgment of your family in this poem.

A beautiful tribute to a great actor. Like some who came before him, Sidney skirted with delinquency in his youth, had a Bahamian accent so thick when he first came to NYC that he was barely understood, took the only job he could get, washing dishes.
But one of the customers saw promise in young Sidney and taught him finally how to read by using New York newspapers. Where he not only learned to read but to pick up some of the best news in the world, the best way to express oneself, and how to improve on is accident. all because of a very kind and generous, I seem to recall, Jewish, man.
His steadfastness to improve himself led to his being accepted first by Broadway and then, eventually, Hollywood. When I first saw him in those great movies you mentioned, I saw what seemed to be a British (from his accent, much improved) actor playing the roles that needed to be played, with dignity, pride, and intelligence. The character he achieved through all of his years right up until recently. Along with many others, Sidney Poitier was a champion in the fight for civil rights over ignorance.
Long live Sidney Poitier! You will never be forgotten!

Russia is ready to invade Ukraine to possible results like Pearl Harbor… World War III.
But here in Houston it's balmy, the next two days to set records with highs of 81° and 83°. Why I left the North where I can't handle the cold while paralyzed.
A young sailor wasn't identified after that day of infamy. But a young woman here in Texas, knew her brother was there and missing, so she mounted a campaign to get her brother back. About five years ago, his remains were finally identified, probably by DNA. Yesterday, 80 years later, he came home to Winnie, Texas and was buried along with his mother and father in the family plot. He was accompanied by a full honor guard of the Navy as fitting his being there attempting to fight back at overpowering Japanese air power.

Most of the young guys drafted did know what they were getting into when it came to the enemy in Vietnam that you have unabashedly described. And to so many who didn't want to go in the first place, but were drafted because the country's leaders could not entice enough soldiers to join the ranks with mere chivalry and patriotism.
You only left out one thing. The PTSD that most of the soldiers of that war ended up with to haunt them for the rest of their lives.

The Republicans are beginning to see the light, by joining with the Democrats (some of them still resisting their own ideology) to pass the first step in the infrastructure bills that will provide good paying jobs and move the country from dependence on large corporations running national infrastructure to distributed infrastructure run by entities as small as individuals like homesteaders originally did.

What a plethora of theaters to choose from! And eventually, you tried them all. I can just imagine what the Fox theater must be like. I hope it has been kept in good condition or restored.
You didn't tell me which one had the risqué movies or which one had the foreign movies with subtitles. That's why we went to the big cities in the 50s to see those movies we couldn't see in our hometowns.
Wausau, Wisconsin had three theaters. The Grand that showed the top run movies, the Hollywood, where we always went on Saturday afternoons for cartoons or double features with 10¢ tickets that mom bought on a strip of tickets. The other one, whose name I don't recall, showed B movies that were sometimes sexy or risqué.
The best time I remember was when a hometown hero, Crazy Legs Elroy Hirsch, who played for the LA Rams, premiered his third movie, Unchanged, at the Grand. I heard that he picked up a bunch of kids on his way into the theater and they all got in free!
I sing Unchained Melody almost every day for my partner because she loves to hear me try to sing like the Righteous Brothers. ;-)

Grandparents are such jewels. I'm so glad that I had time growing up with all four of them like you did. I love the way you describe them and their characteristics. Especially Grandma Jones with her 4 Roses whiskey, snuff and soap operas. They would love to have read your poem in their time.
My Grandpas and Grandmas is correct for plural or more than one. Otherwise using the "'s" indicates that you are having them "possessing" something like grandma's whiskey or grandpa's Bible. MS Word spellchecker has this wrong all the time. It is so bad, that many writers think it is correct to change plural into possessive.

freedom is hard won and not available in equal proportion to everyone in this great country. Until it is, we writers must continue to point out the inconsistencies and hypocrisy that lead to inequality and lack of freedom for some to have the full advantage of the American experience.
Keep up the good fight, I will, until every last person is given a chance to show the color of their character, regardless of their ethnic background or color of their skin.
Beneath that skin, our blood and the blood of our forefathers who fought for this country is a uniform red.

Spring is full of surprises that are lovely the way you portrayed them in your poem. I miss seeing robins. They now bypass my house on their way north to Detroit. I remember when they stopped over. And I also remember the daffodils that used to come up under my hedges in the front of the house… Now long gone, replaced by other wonders like lilies and ferns newly planted and thriving. When I lived "up north" where you are, I always worried about those spring fronts that came through and froze all of the blossoms on the fruit trees, leaving a poor crop during the summer. And all of those early garden plants frozen then had to be replanted.
We felt that cold front too, but it only got down into the 40s overnight, will be back on the mid-80s by this weekend…

Thank you so much for your poetic life history and tribute to Chadwick Bozeman. Strange, it wasn't until Black Panther that he came into my radar, but I can see from his fine education sponsored by other actors that he had great promise at an early age.
I just heard that a second cousin as pancreatic cancer at 90. Otherwise he's quite healthy. But the cancer seems to strike those who are healthy, and then in very short order, cuts their life short, like some of my colleagues who got it when I was working at TSU.
Records show that pancreatic cancer is on the rise. We need to find what is causing it and how to cure it. Perhaps a foundation in the name of Chadwick Bozeman could make that happen sooner?

Basically, snow is just one of the forms of water in nature and is delightful for its properties, particularly its ability to insulate because of the air unit structure of fine crystals in a hexagon pattern that allows so much light through it appears white.
The current Christmas theme did not come from Christ's birth in Bethlehem or wherever. It is doubtful there even was snow. But the tradition came out of northern Europe with many pagan rituals surrounding the winter solstice. Most of those traditions have been molded into what much of the world now considers Christmas.
It's hard to find the snow for the trees.

The Vietnamese war vets did not get the respect that they should have gotten. Just like the essential workers and medical people who have to work long hours in dangerous conditions with rest of the population thinking they're not going to get it or a very mild case of Covid-19.
Freedom means that everyone is equally free. Certain people should not bear the brunt of a societal problem and others, scot-free. At least, people's attitude towards the Vietnam vets is changing for the better as they age.

Forgiveness, when offered, is a sign that the forgiver is somehow, greater, than the one being forgiven. For humble followers, this becomes quite a burden. For one has to believe that one is superior to others in order to forgive them (like God?). I guess that is why it is so hard for people to forgive. They are not powerful enough or self-serving enough to have the power of forgiveness.
Unless we can love ourselves the way we are. Accept who we are and not be swayed by what others write or say, we cannot be in a position with enough power to forgive. I guess that's why almost everyone just lashes out and tries to retaliate.

What a wonderful experience! Urban fishing is some of the best. And perch are some of the best tasting fish there are… Miniature walleye.
I am surprised what you said about pollution. My experience in the fifties in Wisconsin was that many rivers and even lakes were very polluted. Not by fertilizer runoff like today, but by dairy operations, industries and untreated sewage. That was when the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire and alerted everyone to the pollution that industry like Detroit has was doing to the rivers.
You still can't eat the fish in the Wisconsin River when it was banned over 50 years ago because of mercury in the water from paper making. Huge fish can be caught, but not eaten, because eating them will cause brain damage. I had relatives that ate lots of fish from the Wisconsin River and ended up with brain damage and dementia as a result.

If it isn't killing, it's incarceration for minor offenses or no offense at all other than being of color. You're right. It's time it all stopped, and like Martin Luther King pleaded, we all can live together equally under the sun that shines on all.
Your poem cries out for justice. And it is a very fine encapsulation of what most people of color are thinking, often every day when they come under the scrutiny of ill advised and prejudiced people just living their daily lives.
We must vote for leaders who will do something about it and make hateful behavior a crime rather than giving it lip service.

Truly a disgrace in a country that is supposed to allow free speech and religion. As you know I'm not religious but I think of the old spirituals as some of the great music we have today that for so many years buoyed up those deep in oppression with their words of joy and freedom.
Like you wrote in this poem, many of the great songs that we consider part of the American experience have religious words in them. I don't discount that. As long as they are not used to try to entice someone to join the Christian faith above all others, it's okay with me. In fact, encouraged by me. I'm about to write a blues poem because I like the genre so much.

My mother also raised five children, came home from working in the factory and worked a lot more around the household keeping everything in order and moving smoothly so that we can go off and do our best, eventually going to college and succeeding like your family. The only difference is, that she is still alive today at 94 and enjoying all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren visiting and sending her Mother's Day greetings.

She was a force to be reckoned with at a time when her voice and character showed through and conquered hearts and minds. Aretha was an inspiration to us all. Through her music, she taught us to respect the opposite sex. We need more respect and dignity in society today. We hear of these tragedies almost daily. Automatic driving cannot come too soon. Those who drink lose their sense of propriety and often do things that they regret later. Taking them out of the equation like those free rides on holidays is essential to preventing terrible tragedies like this.
You reminded me of the tragedy that befell my girlfriend's stepsister on 99 in California. She was driving with a friend and had both of their babies in car seats behind them in the backseat. Her nine-year-old son was riding the middle. A car came across the median and hit their car head-on in a fireball. Somehow, the nine-year-old boy escaped, but my girlfriend's sister, her friend, and both their babies, died. Alcohol may have been involved. I don't know.

Definitely a tragic event that no one should ever have to experience. In this day and age, there is no excuse for driving while intoxicated. I'm not sure if the drunk driver was also killed, but if he survived, I hope he was held accountable to the full extent of the law.

Your poem makes me grateful for what I heard in the news this morning. DNA testing can eliminate a thousand suspects and focus on one or two. The old idea of lineups, eyewitness accounts and wealthy perpetrators shifting blame on innocent bystanders is now nearly over, thank goodness. It is time that these cold cases get solved as quickly as possible as the perpetrators are tracked down by the irrefutable evidence they left on the scene from their crude attacks, thinking that they would never have to face the devil for what they did. It is never too late to correct injustice.

This brought back a flood of memories for me. I had a friend who was murdered back in 1973. His body was dumped and then burned beyond recognition. His killer has never been caught, and for whoever it, Hell is not good enough for them either.

Happy 4th Michael! So good to read your poem. For it made me think of all the innocent children caught in the crossfire of war. What is worse than war? It is genocide. Innocent children being slaughtered just because they are Christian. When will the injustice stop? I look at a country like Vietnam. No one would have thought of visiting it when all those innocent people were being killed in the crossfire of war. However, a miracle has occurred. Today, Vietnam is one of the most popular travel destinations, as is Thailand and many areas of South East Asia. Who would have thought that many of our clothes we wear today now come from Vietnam? What happened? They are truly being blessed by God Almighty. Only God could have made this happen. Still, we need to pray for the children. Amen!

It's been a long time since I wrote a Memorial Day poem or attended or watched any of the many services around the country attended by ever older people every year.
Commercialism has crept in making pastimes and family get-togethers much more important than honoring the soldiers we remember who lost their lives. There are now so few soldiers and so few of us who know any of them, that it seems a stretch for us to honor those who now go to war for money rather than to save United States of America or the world.

Almost to personal to reply. But I understand the dilemma. No problem with my immediate family although they are more likely to take a vacation or travel than come and see me. But you're right about cousins. I've always reached out to my cousins and made a point to see them after thousands of miles of travel. For the most part, they have not reciprocated. I believe it's the nature of our society today. We spent so much time on our personal needs, we forget to spend some on those who we were close to long ago.

What a wonderful poem with a wake-up call of a message! Yes, brother Michael, we all need to take time to show our love while we still can. I agree that love doesn't stop just because one is rejected for making an offer of love. However, if someone persists, especially on days like St. Valentine's Day to offer unrequited love, it can be considered to be harassment.
I think the old adage, "It's better to have loved and lost, then to have not loved at all," is a better approach to the problem. If others don't love you, love yourself, love nature, and treat everyone and everything with kindness and your love will be returned.
