I was recently at our cabin in Potter Co, PA. After doing the necessary things; opening up the cabin, cleaning windows & washing curtains, I sat down with your book "Boone's Creek-Almost Home." Needless to say, nothing else got done until I finished it! It is not normal for me to sit & read a book the whole way through, but I could not put it down. It was fantastic. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work.

Took it to the grocery store with me to wait on Friend Goldie. Read some of the writes, amazingly lifelike, true and funny. She writes it like it is in real life, amazingly the kids do cause lots of tension in the home, but she handles it great. So does her husband get in troulbe lots of time but explains his way out of it nicely.
It is so rich in truth, concerns, problem solving, a must for all those who like good stories about families.

Yes, it is time to check on friends. Lately I've been thinking more about old friends that I haven't heard from in a long time. Recently, one of my best students checked on me and let me know where he was and what his situation is. Same thing is true of another student who was so helpful to me when she worked in another department, but never hesitated to give me a hand.
I worried about an old friend that I had roomed with in our master's degree programs. He lost his wife last year. When I called three days ago, he cheerfully greeted me like he always does and said that, he was not unhappy and still close to his three sons. And then, yesterday, I sent an email to a friend who co-authored technical articles with me 30 years ago, and he responded with asking me how I was. At a time like this, it's especially good checking in on aging friends. They may need our assurance that everything is OK with us and that we can still keep in touch.

It may take a while, perhaps a year or even two, before everything will seem, "normal," again. But if we compare what happened during the episode of the Spanish flu, killing a much larger proportion of those infected. It took only a couple of years before the very prosperous Roaring 20s. And, as for economic impact, the Great Depression had people struggling for over a decade.
I think it is impatient to think of patience after only two months of vigorous government and individual attempts to help us help ourselves. We are learning how to deal with crisis better, understanding that we must change some of our behavior to live better, and realize that many of our wishful marginal businesses are not really necessary or even profitable.

Certainly not a time to give up. Although I feel that many who live paycheck to paycheck and are renters or homeowners with heavy mortgage obligation, may be under great strain if they have lost their jobs. For those that are in that terrible situation, I hope that they will think through what they are doing and see if there are other options for employment rather than just despairing or waiting for handouts to save them.
Those of us economically sound and free from disease at this time, are the fortunate ones who can greet the morning the way we always have, with joy and looking forward to another day.

I agree with you. It's the simple things in life we do and who we commune with that we find comfort in.
I find retirement comforting because I am no longer doing the bidding of others to make a living. I am also comforted with knowing that I have good caregivers, especially my partner, to keep the pain of my condition from me while giving me freedom to pursue my interests like reading your stories and writing myself. To me, good food and being warm is very comforting, as well has being able to have good sleep.

It has been reported around here, and the greater Houston area, that household disturbances and violence are way up. I understand that those who have lived paycheck to paycheck and have lost their jobs, with no money to even buy food, are very stressed and often in disagreement with spouses about how and why they are in this situation.
Our governor has opened up the state to businesses, except for a few that will be able to open on May 18. So far, businesses are finding things rather slow, but the beaches at Galveston are packed. Unfortunately, many younger people, with the low infected and death numbers here, are not wearing any required facial mask and are not paying any attention to social distancing. Peer behavior often trumps science when it comes to good sense.

Looks like you are handling it quite well. Even though some of your clients are struggling. Like anything else, kids learn new technologies very easily, but older people seem to have great difficulty adjusting their lifestyles to take the time required to learn a new technology. More and more, we have to be lifelong learners.
I don't text. My fingers don't work and I can't even use a touchscreen computer or smart device like a cell phone… Can't even hold it up to my ear. Right now this computer is a workaround like so many I have used. But I hope I die before technology gets beyond my capability. ;-)

What a fluffy little puppy Marley was! I was once in a house where there was an aftershock of the Loma Prieta earthquake, visiting. I was on the phone when the resident Maltese became quite agitated. I was talking with my girlfriend's mother in San Francisco and she had to inform me that we were experiencing an aftershock… 4.0.
My dog, Jazz, a Pomeranian, was a bit heavier, maybe 20 pounds, but not much of a lapdog. He would come up on the couch with me when I was watching TV and stretch out close to my leg next to me where I could pet him. But when he got too hot, he would go in the bathroom, and lay on the cool linoleum. Every once in a while looking around the corner of the open door to see if I was still there.
I forbid him from my bed because I had to turn frequently and I didn't want to crush him or have him interfere with me doing it. Jazz took it as a challenge and tried to get onto my bed quite often. When I could no longer chase him out of bed, I found that if he got on my legs I could get my foot under him and throw him from the bed. He would land on his feet on the carpet with only his ego hurt. He learned to lie under the bed because he always wanted to be close to me. Jazz found a good place under my wheelchair as I worked. When he heard the click of my beginning to move, he would always get out ahead of having his long hair caught in my wheels.
And, I do recall that thunderstorms with loud thunder scared him a bit.

As my partner just showed me the lemonade she made for me this morning from her lemon tree that she juices and freezes so that I can have it all year long, I read your little piece about how you at peace with your life the way it is right now.
My partner had to close down her alteration shop. But decided to make free masks for her customers. When she called them up and they came to pick up their masks, they often ordered more and refused to take them free, sometimes paying a lot for materials and labor. So far this month, her sister-in-law and her have made $3000, nearly more than they ordinarily make.
A girlfriend that I had once lost her husband to a car wreck with six small children to care for. When we went to a restaurant, she ordered water and some lemon slices, normally free for tea, or perhaps for water. She squeezed the lemon slices into the water, and then added some sugar from the little packets on the table, making her own free lemonade. A lesson from hard times.
Since I normally stay at home in retirement, nothing has really changed for me.

Well done, well done, Kathryn! This too shall pass. You know God gives us believers time alone; time to spend with him and laying aside all earthly cares. All things work together for good, for those who love God. I live alone but never really alone, for the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. The apostle Paul said: Rejoice always, and again I say rejoice. Even in the midst of this pandemic, we still have joy, because there is no real joy without Christ in our lives. This joy cannot be taken away unless we are distracted. We certainly have been thrown into a different routine (not me, being a shut in already) than our busy lives are used to. But it is a time to reflect on what we are doing. Modern conveniences allow us a lot of extra time that we usually fill with activities that are really not necessary. I think, although domestic abuse cases are up in our community, that this change of pace is enabling a lot of families to get together and communicate in ways they haven't for a very long time.
My partner is one of those busy, busy people. When she closed her alterations shop, she immediately became antsy because she couldn't go there every day. But her sister-in-law started making masks to give away to their customers. Yesterday, she came home complaining that the Houston Police Department had ordered 200 masks and they were only able to turn out about 50 a day. So, in spite of her business being closed, she is back working harder and longer hours, still complaining that she has no time and is tired. ;-)

A very nice, calming message. Your mentioning of the Bald Eagle brings back many memories. I remember the spraying of DDT in my childhood… The smell, that almost eradicated the Bald Eagle from the landscape. But then, I remember seeing many in the Boundary Waters wilderness in 1959. The lone eagle that I saw from my front window of my A-frame in January in Northwestern Wisconsin feeding upon a dead calf thrown out by a farmer. When I called the DNR, I was told they were rare but still flew up and down the Chippewa River tributaries. With the rivers frozen, carrion in the country was most needed in below zero weather.
In my senior year in college, 1965, I took expository writing as an elective. My elderly spinster professor was fond of birds and bird stories, especially eagles. She related the story of Old Abe, the Bald Eagle captured on the Chippewa River and used by a Wisconsin Regiment as a mascot during the Civil War. When he died after the war, was stuffed and placed in the state capital. To get a good grade, everyone wrote about birds and eagles. I didn't, and got the best grades of the entire class.
There were always eagles in the air when I visited my parents' cottage on flowage in northern Wisconsin. Wonderful birds to watch soaring in the blue sky while relaxing on a lounge. My father even built a platform on a pole on an island in the lake, to encourage nest making.

So I don't have any time to worry, just worrying about how I'm going to fit in all of these things and still continue to write a little bit each day on my books, as well as do a little reading.

I don't take a biblical view of the situation. But this pestilence, if you will, need not affect the supply chain for food and necessary materials. Maintaining sanitary practices and social distancing should allow necessary commodities to reach everyone.
We had an initial rush on stores like everyone else here in the United States. People usually panic from rumors they hear from their friends. Now spread at lightning speed on cell phones and the Internet, even before officials can announce what they are doing. But many people in our huge community of 5 million people are out there making sure that children and the elderly are able to get what they need without having to expose themselves. Essential businesses are open and behaving carefully to avoid further spread that is happening in spite of most people's efforts.
Coronavirus is very contagious. It will result in serious complications for about 20% of those infected and it will kill about 4%, usually with underlying conditions. Panic won't change that. But it might increase the rate of contagion.
Best to be calm, have a plan, and come up with ways to occupy time at home, relieving the stress.

His right, you don't know football. But I do agree with you that those get-togethers in the house of the men watching football is a great opportunity for the women to get together as well in the kitchen.

My own 9/11 story, "A Day To Remember", was similar in its approach, but somewhat lengthier, for unavoidable reasons of geography -- Ms. Neff-Perry was right there in NYC, whereas I started the day in Peru and ended it in Panama.

A beautiful remembering some of your mother. When I left her apartment in 2011, my mother cried. She exclaimed, "I won't see you again! It proved prophetic. In the years since, I tried several times to arrange another road trip the 1200 miles to see her and the 1200 miles back, also seeing aging friends and relatives, some who never came to see me, but welcomed by visits, nonetheless. The last three years, two planned trips fell through when caregivers could make the trip taking so long.
But she called me regularly, asking me not to call, at 4 PM on Mondays for our weekly talk up until recently when her phone no longer worked for her. She left us on February 14 at 95. I could not attend the memorial with my brothers and sister. But I am fine that she is no longer in pain.

This is exceptional and from the heart. I too, have lost my Mom and I miss her so so much. I will see her again one day and I wait for that day. She died at 39 yrs. old, leaving 8 kids behind. She was hit by a car. God bless you and comfort us both.

But I think it's important to know that if there's something in your heart, it should be shared. Psychiatrists refer to this as "stroking." I think it's common sense.

But then the ending lines are so grand...

The Pastor's Wife is a very heartfelt poem. I liked these lines very much:
"We’ve always known
Your servants heart
That’s why we’ve loved you
From the very start."
It's words such as this that help make relationships grow.
Very smart!
I wrote a poem for my wife on our 25th wedding anniversary.

But have you wondered what it would be like in a stable.
Maybe the manger was the cattle drinking or eating trough.
