With the COVID-19 pandemic still going strong at this early point in 2021, and many parents reluctant to send their children back to school, this is probably one of the most helpful books in which they could invest. Pretty fantastic that the copyright indicates "A Teaching Handbook for the Non Teacher ... or I must have been mad to think I wanted to teach" was published back in 2000. It probably has never been more needed than right now.

I’ve been a fan of the Western genre my entire life, and this is definitely one worth reading. The author has penned a very intriguing tale that keeps the reader totally immersed in the story line, and period details are etched superbly.
The characters in this book have also been finely tuned, both the good guys, and the bad. I especially liked the main character, Marshal Pappy Watson.
This is also the first Western I’ve read in which early forensic science comes into play, which adds a very unique twist to the tale. CSI meets The Old West, and I’m now hoping for a sequel.

I read this multi-ploted book from cover to cover. What is they say, "A page turner?"Jumping between plots is a gimmick of mine. Molly, you've stolen my style? Of course I jest. The dated colloquial dialog was different. Though I couldn't figure out the vintage, I found it likable, and I adjusted quickly. Molly claims she writes cozy mysteries then offers you a married Casanova with three children who kill his mistresses when they get pregnant. Then blames them because they got pregnant and thinks he's justified. Like it was their duty to prevent their pregnancy. I don't remember precisely now but, counting the fetuses, I believe the number was more than a dozen. At times you fear for his wife's life. However, you will be pleased when a villain stops to help a motorist fix a tire and gets a knife stuck into his evil throat. Then, I spent several minutes figuring out, in the absence of explicit identification, whodunit. When I talked to Molly about the book she told me I'd guessed right. You read the book. See if you can figure it out. She'll disarrange your mind with all those plot twists. Well, I won't babble anymore. Will the Inspector's Wife escape the lethal hands of the bent copper? You'll have to discover that yourself. I'm sworn to secrecy. Enjoyed the read. (Reposted)

Once you fall in love with teaching - it is a horse that can't be put back in the barn so to speak. Unfortunately, teaching is one of the most difficult arenas to throw your hat into now a days. This is a much needed handbook and I wish you tremendous success with it.

Hi "m" for "Molly" (I didn't know that's what it stood for) ! This's the first piece of prose I've read from your hand, and it does you proud: the nuances of feeling that you extract from/in the interstices of a third-party relationship, the sensitivity to and compassion for the hidden and overt sufferings in others - though I'm not aware of the contours and fallouts of Lou Gehrig's disease - and the distance you keep without grating interference through quiet and subtle interpolations to inform with compassionate detail - all make the review all the more praiseworthy. I learnt a few "nuggets" about you, too: sometime Social Services Director in a nursing-care facility, then teacher, now reviewer par excellence. (I'm not a believer in the kind of "back-scratching" going on non-stop on literary sites, but I must make an exception, here.) The "trouble" with your review is that it so captures the unspoken and unspeakable pain between the protagonists in the book that one (I say it tongue-in-cheek) does not feel the "need" to read the book, itself (I'm sure one must), but it does speak reams for your own ability to evoke the unfathomable in the feelings of others. I note also en passim your inimitable "signature" in your wishes for the author: "never stop writing" though somewhat misplaced in the sentence. Gl

I was attracted to the title, because my mother, Nina, died on February 17. My mother, never came quite to grips with my paralysis. But I remained her favorite son. So, I see some parallels between this book about Nina Freese's struggle with ALS and my mother's struggle with my paralysis.
Believe me, if you ask my caregivers, it is very hard to care for someone with advanced disability. And taking care of someone with ALS, their mind still sharp, but their body terribly affected, is the most challenging of all. My mother was in hospice and in great pain at 95. Her passing was a great relief.

While fiction, based on what little I've garnered from African friends tribal differences, I believe that Wind Follower probably is based on reality from the author's meticulous research or experience. There is much we can learn from novels like this.
I just read in National Geographic about Africatown near Mobile, Alabama established by diverse Africans who arrived, illegally in 1860, on the last slave ship. They were freed from slavery five years later. Very industrious, they bought land and built the town , continuing much of their African traditions and language, intact.

Thank you for this insight into gurus and self-help scams. When I was young and running into a lot of young people searching for spirituality, I often ran into people who claimed to be psychic or have some mystic powers that we should all follow. They never asked me for money, except the Hare Krishnas, just appeared to me to be self-righteous phonies.
I'm very good at helping myself and have never read a self-help book that I can recall except maybe textbooks, Peter Drucker's, Time Management, or a little book called, How to Lie with Statistics. Oh, a small book on how to prune my trees and shrubs.
One area that Damien apparently missed is not using "Eastern claptrap," but the "good news" from the Bible, making the Tony Robbins of the guru set the Joel O'Steen of the religious right (never wrong) set. Gurus all making gobs of money off of gullible people with inferiority complexes they shouldn't have.

A great little book for teaching mathematical principles and a very young age. It not only covers fairness, but the idea of sharing and dividing correctly. I learned that an early age, sharing many things with my brother. We split monetary things down to the penny and I developed in early need to fulfill promises quickly fairly, and down to a penny.
From an early age our mother was an expert at making all kinds of cookies. We participated throughout by cleaning out thoroughlyThe mixing bowl and licking the spoon that the cookie dough was mixed with, tested the first, still very limp and gooey, lip and tongue burning hot cookies that came off the cookie sheets, and then consumed as many as we could, before they cooled and were put into jars for later consumption. All of our friends liked to come over and help us eat the endless cookies that were available.
Don't recall we ever had to divide scarce cookies except those that were bought commercially and in packages, like Fig Newtons and others like Oreos. One time my father got a bulk package of commercial gingersnaps that lasted for a very long time. We softened them in milk so they no longer snapped. Our mother's were soft and chewy, and much better tasting, even without milk.

While not your ordinary review, I admire how well you did this one. My only caveat is that the book is dated 1999, a lot has happened in computer language for the Internet in the last 20 years, while basic HTML remains rocksolid as the primary language of the Internet because of its simplicity.
I started my website in 1997, before writing my first novel in 1999. At first, I used a template provided by my Internet provider at the time. Soon, I found that the template was too rigid and I couldn't make changes very easily. I never liked learning programming from books. About 1990-92 I studied at night for two years the manual for a database program called Double Helix. I was finally able to use it and used it extensively for my work. The best part about Helix was its Internet compatibility. After I finally learned to master Helix, I found that I could tutor an attentive student to do what I did in about two weeks.
So, I went online to learn HTML with the rudimentary search capability there was then. Grudgingly, I picked up the <tags> marked like that used to manipulate text, images and formatting quite quickly, and never looked back. Creating my own front page (.index) and links to all the other pages in one or two clicks. Currently, I have about a thousand pages, mostly of all of my poems that I've written since 1997 online. My books are there, of course. But not my stories, they are here on AD.
I never learned JavaScript and it is still Greek to me. But HTML is okay for my purposes. Internet security has forced text based HTML to be "protected" in many ways. Most of my webpages are now subject to "a security risk." I have nothing sensitive or monetary on my pages, so I don't worry about that. My website is too small to be a target of attack.
It's hard work and very tedious to maintain a website. You must be absolutely correct with every letter and symbol or it won't work. Those of you who think your page on Facebook or here on AD is your website, are simply wrong. Sorry for going on like this, but I hope it gets more readers for your fine reviews, Molly.

I enjoyed this review--detailed enough to be useful, well-written, and surprisingly--evocative. My mother knit everything. She knit sweaters with horses on the back for me, she knit anglers hooking monster bass for my brothers, and she knit beautiful cable sweaters for all 9 family members.
I adored the cable sweaters and tried so hard to learn basic steps to knitting. I couldn't. But reading this review made me remember.
And I'll bask in that, even if I can't knit a stich!

I think you have done a service for all knitters by reviewing this book on cable knitting. I had an aunt that was an expert crocheter. For the bicentennial she crocheted 13 star flags about 4 feet long that made nice bed covering or wall hangings. She sold them for $13 each and each took about 30 hours to crochet. And, in the summer of 1978, I joined a group of weavers for a week long odyssey in Guatemala. I bought a hand woven wool, black and gold "mucho grande" blanket with birds on it for a meager eight dollars.
I put away my last cable sweater when I moved here to Houston and haven't worn it again. I find cable sweaters to be heavy and bulky, and actually not as warm as some other kinds of weaves.

A lovely paean to the male role model all children must have to grow up in a fulfilled manner...especially daughters. In this new age of same-sex parents, I often wonder about what the ultimate outcome will be in terms of their perspective on the natural logos of social life. I lost my own father at the age of four. Now that I think about it, I've never honored his memory in verse. Perhaps it's far more overdue than I think. Thanks for sharing this perspective on your own father. He sounds like one excellent specimen of fatherhood...and how rare that often is, these days!

People who do harmful things to our children are evil and sick! You must have evil in your heart to be sick! Sick people are killing our children and our children are killing or murdering us! So pitiful and sad but God is the final judge! All of us will be judged for how we treat one another and the works we do in our bodies, (our temples)! We should all be grieving at the need for our president to weep, but as a citizen who is totally fed up with how capitalism and democracy has been made a shame by this "sandbox caliber" congress, hell, not difficult to understand his tears. One can only imagine his family, his wife, his children all weeping for him. Now, this inept congress is off for 5 weeks of fund raising, or bathing in the sun while the border problem continues to fester. Oops- "House Republicans delay recess over border dispute." Don't hold your breath. And the Hannety and Fox "kindergarten rank" of journalism continue to muster up ignorance as the quintessential pride of...what do those clowns call it...preservation of the constitution? Please. Spin and more spin is the order of the day with today's disgraceful definition of journalism, as determined by media viewership ratings. See, how visceral some reader's sense of empathy for the president might be?

Children always look up to their teachers to explain why things are happening the way they are, and some even the teachers would have a hard time in coming up with an explanation. How do you explain why the President weep? Perhaps their parents may fill them in on the answer, because you have to be so careful with your answer because you don't know what their parents' reaction to that will be. Hard task for the teachers nowadays.

Oh, I know this is an old piece but the title drew me in and my heart swelled with pride knowing you cared enough for this creature of God that would bring even a moment of love into your life shared with her. I am sure if you have not located her or a body nearby that she got picked up and most likely by someone who had a heart enough to pick up what they believed to be a stray. We can only pray that she is happy whoever she is with. I do not know why you prefaced this saying you are not a poet...when this is what a poet does best...putting lines together to not just send a message or a story but so creatively as you have here.

We live in a sick world that does not seem to get better, only worse we, as a society, still have not found the solutions that we so desperately need to combat this evil that pervades our society I see much discussion but few real fixes We have known also about bullying and still it plays havoc in the lives of students. My son is a teacher and was attacked by a student who said that he gave him a bad grade.........my son tried to explain to the parents who came in to see him ranting and raving that their son was being "picked on" and wouldn't listen to the fact that their son had earned the grade he was given. The next day my son walked into his classroom and luckily is a big guy. This student was hiding behind the door with a chair raised over his head meaning to strike my son. God bless and be with you teachers!!! God bless the children! 'Tis truly sad what happened in Connecticut........truly sad!!

I very much liked student 4 because of the happy animals idea. And I also liked number 8 because of the warm freedom on the grass idea. And all the students should be congratulated for making such nice poems with the very stick rules of this type of poetry. Congratulations to all.

Hello everyone. I'm from Japan, but was born in San Francisco, California. And grew up in Pittsburg California. Can you find that little town on the map? It's near Concord and next to the river that goes out to the Golden Gate Bridge. Pittsburg is 40 miles east of San Francisco.
I like all those poems. One line I like is 'FLUFFY FARM WILD GOBBLE'. That's very poetic. I also like 'FLUFF PUFF WILD ROAR'. My favorite is student #9 with the line 'LAMB CUTE WARM' because I raised up a baby lamb when I was a boy. I give it milk from a bottle until he became a big sheep. So the words Lamb Cute Warm made me have that memory and made me feel good. But I liked all the poems with the good suject. Keep writing and learning good english, because writing is so fun and important for comunication.

E-e-e-e-e-k surely holds sway in these acrostics. In first grade I believe it took me the entire first half to learn to hold a pencil in my right hand. I was a lefty and my first grade teacher, a family friend would not hear of it. Your remarkably creative students are writing marvelous acrostics.
