Interesting history. I have learned that at one time nearly all of the wood in Europe had been cut just when coal became useful as a fuel and saved the trees. Greedy "lumber barons" very quickly tried to cut all of the old-growth virgin forest in the United States in the 1800-1950 era. Fortunately in a few places, stands of this ancient forest were saved by national parks, national and state forests, and individuals.
