In the end...all we really take with us from this life is the relationships we had with others, and hopefully we will meet our ancestors on the other side. :~)
Family history or genealogy has always intrigued me. It never ceases to amaze me the little traits that I share with me ancestors. Just this last year I learned that my grandfather wrote poetry- a man I never knew, yet we share this love for words... Knowing the little stories makes them seem so much more real to me...

Two years ago I had the opportunity to journey to Iceland and I discovered that the place was teaming with my family history. Unlike you I didn't need a shovel - I only needed spade. However, like you I do cherish the past. You put it so well when you wrote: 'Our lives here are the fulfillment of the dreams of grandparents and great grandparents.' It adds value to our lives to remember this.

I think many times we would like to stop those we love from taking chances or pushing themselves too hard. but, quoting you, "I couldn't stop the very force that keeps you going."
To stand by(although you may be quaking inside) is a great compliment and a generous helping of loving support. "I believe in you" may be the most valuable gift we can give.

Always something to ponder... when i looked into the eyes of my newborn grandchildren, and they gazed contentedly back at me, it was like they knew me and all would be well.. a connection that lasts forever, but lost forever if missed. It is a good question. Having watched both my mother in law and now a good friend of mine develop dementia and Alzheiomers I think even though we do not have a say, that I would rather pass on then become what have become which is to say people who are not the ones we knew but strangers in bodies that we must learn to love all new...if that makes sense.

I have seen and felt a lot of deaths in my life and I am only consoled by the smiles of first my children and now my grandchildren. I told my brother when my father died any time he wanted to see them all he had to do was look into the eyes of his baby boy and he would see them...I believed that then and I believe it today.

This is a very thought provoking write. My father lived until 91 and looked and acted like he was 70, and he never gave up his independence. How fortunate it is for your father that he has seen and experienced so many years of life. He is a suvivor and I bet an interesting person to know.

An interesting write. We are what we are at any given time in our lives. Don't we all wish we could go back and in retrospect undo those "believed" wrongs we unwittingly committed. Life is being, getting, doing, analyzing, and then changing. It is constant.
