What scale and tools do I collect with,
What voyeur’s wrap I claim in readiness.
Are the ages of my father come to bear,
Or will be for next generation’s benefit:

I think Michael is on to the gist of your little ditty. The "skunk" in your closet is a metaphor for what is really being carefully kept by you.

When I'm lucky enough,
to get my hands on some skunk,
I keep it tightly sealed,
and stashed in my reefer trunk.

What smells pleasant to one may not be so to another. I used to have a friend who had an underarm odor, it was terrible but her boyfriend said she has a natural pleasant odor. Well, that was something we learned that not everyone smells something would have a similar reaction.
