A mesmerizing story. So mentally productive of Merlie's (and the author's) mind. Finding the kitten had made a profound change in what she would do. I'm not sure about the ending though. I would've almost preferred, that she died. Perhaps she did and I didn't get it.

One of the best stories I've read in a long time with just enough glimmer of hope to make me think Merlie can do it because of the kitten she happened to come by. Cuz everyone, in some small measure or large is needed.
