Books like this are important in helping interpret and revision history the way it was with the sometimes, ugly, truth revealed. When I became land manager for the predominantly black university in Houston, Texas Southern University, designed by the state legislature to be "separate and unequal." I discovered that most of the businesses in the area were Chinese. They were being bought by the University, leaving a vacuum of services like the Chinese were providing that has developed leading to black areas becoming almost devoid of everyday business services.
Blacks have to drive out of their neighborhoods into white neighborhoods get these services. I once wrote a proposal for funding with a black professor determining the "causal factors leading to black business failure."it was obvious to the other professor and me that black business start ups failed much more often than those of white or the cultures. Unfortunately my teaching was suspect by the white, dollar a year, graduate business school dean, and I was fired. So I never learned whether that study was funded.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have experienced a lot in my short life, as has my spouse. However, I have not experienced living in a large family as you have. I have more dead relatives than I have living relatives, at least in my adoptive family.

Having grown up in a well ordered and well known family with all four grandparents around and many aunts and uncles and cousins, it is hard for me to fully understand what it means to be adopted.
But I think your adoption is a bit like losing 1/2 of what I thought were my friends when I became paralyzed at 20. So I can empathize a bit with your gains and losses. But as Dylan wrote, those of us not busy living are busy dying, your eagerness to move forward, no matter what is shown in your essay. And if nothing else, you have experienced more, in your short life, probably than 90% of the people living or dead. And experience counts for a lot.

I believe that humans are inherently good and individually intelligent, all doing the best they can with the information they have to work with and the way they process that information. To address your comment, the relationship between the Korean and Black community is a very complex topic, and if you'd like to learn more, I recommend reading my book, Profiles of KAD Relations with the Black Community: '92 to '20. There's also a relatively new movie on Netflix about Latasha Harlins that can provide a quicker, more visual understanding of historical circumstances. As for being bullied, I think it was unfortunately so common to my childhood and adolescence that I got used to it.

It is really unfortunate when people are singled out by the way they look or their lifestyles. I have always been open to people from other cultures and found that they are just like me when you really get down to it. Everyone is striving to do better and be better.
Unfortunately, there are always those feel hurt, left out or abused, usually from their own ignorance. These are the kind of people who rally around their own lifestyle and pick on those who do not have their same values or lifestyle. While Asians often provide necessary businesses in black communities, the black people sometimes resent the success and wealth accumulated from hard work and skills that black people are unwilling to do or learn.
Glad that you are writing about your experience in the DC area. It must've been very hard to grow up in a community where you were the only one and constantly bullied by ignorant fellow students who had nothing better to do.
