As an author myself, I've noticed that every so often a novel hits the bookstore shelves with 'Read Me, I'm Good' written all over the cover. OUT OF THE BOX is one of those novels. It's about a subject that is all too familiar...a bad marriage that is going nowhere. OUT OF THE BOX is about one woman's courage and intestinal fortitude to do something about it.
Marla Harris Simmons, a middle-aged house wife, has endured 20 years of her husband's controlling ways. When he announces he's having an affair, Marla feels forced to escape out of the box of her marriage, and enter a world of uncertainty.
If you read but one book this year, do yourself a favor and read Wanda L. Harrell's OUT OF THE BOX. You'll be glad you did. I know I was.

While I don't yearn for apple butter because I enjoyed other preservatives better, I fondly remember my grandmother's and mother's making of apple butter, a staple sweetener in my youth. Never thought of buying apple butter in the store. It seems to me that it was made from junk apples that weren't good for eating and had to be peeled and carefully cut up because they were so full of worms. We didn't know back then that we were throwing away vitamins and minerals in the peelings and protein in those worms. ;-)

Much of what you've written can still be experienced by Pennsylvania farm children today. I grew up in Wisconsin; while not on a farm, my experience, especially not having air conditioning and ice cold pump water, was similar. As a child, the only wine my relatives drank was Mogen David. My only contact with Concord grapes. I liked the wine, and always asked for some. Fall color in Wisconsin is unbeatable.
It was only when I lived in Morgantown, West Virginia for six years that I discovered the beauty of fall in the mountains and Concord grapes. My office was a house built in 1928 that West Virginia University had purchased and our department had converted for use. There was a grape arbor on the side of the house. That summer, it was purple with grapes, and, with the help of some graduate students, we harvested half of a large paper shopping bag of the sweet fruit. I took the bag with me all the way to northern Wisconsin over the Labor Day weekend where it was enjoyed by everyone at our family get-together on the lake.

Your wonderful memories gave me chills. I have a friend who grew up in that area, and at the mention of Glenville, (where a cousin of mine now lives), brought back childhood memories for him. I am at a disadvantage, having grown up in Baltimore.. My friend enjoyed the memories immensely and even called his mom who still lives in the area.

I see this was written in December. Maybe by now you have found your one and only. If not, you are probably still looking. You have probably turned 63 by now and realized it is just another day.
I've heard this longing from another not so long ago. Maybe it is because I am about to turn 70 soon that I no longer have that yearning. I did have it all my life, and like you a number of men have passed through, but none has been the right one obviously.
I hope you do find your 'one and only'. If not, maybe, like me, you will come to terms with the fact that he does not exist, and you will be okay with that. If my 'one and only' should suddenly appear despite my lack of thinking of him, I would be amazed and I would be happy. But I can be happy without him and I am.

Reads like your memoir of a time gone by. I just read my mother's account of an earlier time before she married my father in 1942. Wonderful, much to be said for the days before the computer enter our lives and the workplace. What some forget is the fact that the computer is nothing more than another tool in the tool box, nothing more, nothing less. My first introduction to a computer was called the "T-2". It was the prototype to the "Univac" used by the military in the begining. Unlike today's computers, you could and did actually walk inside of it to change the reals.... How's that??

Before I was born, when my dad was in the Navy, he lost two fingers in a glass cutting machine. I don't know if he missed those fingers every day of his life, but I'm sure that they were supposed to be a part of him forever, and it was a loss no one should endure. If we are born into a body and grow into it, we are one. If we are added to that body, we have the potential to be a sickness to it. But we are all born as a part of the earth, and we must be important to it for so long as the earth allows us to live.
