That was a trying time, especially for San Francisco. I was looking for a smaller place closer to the University. In Houston after my divorce. In Montrose, so many "cute" apartments were for sale or rent. Our university had an inordinate amount of gay faculty staff. Many disappeared.
I can see your journalistic background in the writing. Very clean and direct. Describing exactly what happened without flourishing, and giving us a sense what it was like. I can't believe that Mother Theresa, in a large Victorian like that, was only taking in 10 people dying at a time. I'm sure there were hundreds dying each week. But the way you wrote it, everyone was lovingly cared for right up to the end.
And I want to thank you personally for helping out with your volunteer journeys. One of the reason the great city of San Francisco is so great, it's open arms.

If every one of us used only what we need, the world would be an incredibly more beautiful place for everyone. We would use far less resources and no one on earth would go uncared for.
The only thing I see wrong about this man that you are describing is that he has six children. He is, while being kind to children, even adopting one from Africa, contributing to the overpopulation of the earth. All that causes is more and more stress in the overpopulated areas where resources like food and clean water are already stretched to the limit.

Your grandparents indeed were special. Making organs is a skill that very few people have. And your grandmother was generous to a fault. My grandparents were simple farmers and less lofty in their accomplishments. But I do remember my maternal grandmother telling me a story as I drove her in my 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado in the summer of 1968 from San Francisco back home to Wisconsin at 90 mph with air-conditioning on Interstate 80. That was after she had flown from central Wisconsin in a small plane to Minneapolis, and then, a jet plane at over 700 mph to San Francisco. She described her family moving from Arkansas to North Dakota in a covered wagon that took the entire summer when she was a child.

Yours among so many tributes. I was amazed to find out that she gave away 300 million books to children. What a legacy!
In 1971, my grandmother gave me her 17 inch black and white TV with rabbit ears before I left for West Virginia and my doctoral studies.
As I drove through Wheeling on my way there, I heard for the very first time, Country Roads, by John Denver and others.
Immersed in my deep studies in my little studio apartment, I turned on the TV every afternoon to the Wheeling channel to watch the Porter Wagoner show. What made the show work for me was to see Dolly Parton sing all those songs like an angel at such a young age.
I thought there might be a love connection between her and Porter. Yesterday, I heard that she wrote I Will Always Love You for him.

Another wonderful story about a wonderful man who was your mentor. I was amazed to find out that you didn't paint until you were 31. I guess that's not new…I really didn't start writing fiction until I was in my 60s.
Your story reminds me of my story for one of my many mentors, Warren Z Watson. His parents gave up on him when he was a child because of his disability. But he had a brilliant mind that carried him through a long life that was very active physically as well as intellectually. He was a master at math and the history of science.

Three Hundred Orphaned Children and the Person Who Loved an Cared for Them (Article) - 7/23/2026 1:50:25 PM
What a wonderful story of your association with Father Norman and his love for Mexican orphans. My only concern is whether or not his mission to help 300 or more orphaned Mexican children continued after his death in 2013. By that time he had nurtured young orphans through education into adulthood. Perhaps, they are carrying on is mission today.
The only edit I saw was there probably weren't 20 million orphaned children in Mexico City at that time. Perhaps maybe only 20,000, which seems like a mighty number when Father Norman only had 300 beds.
The good news is that one of our fellow writers, Scott Zachary, for the past 10 years or more has made it his mission to help Christian charities south of the border and worldwide. Primarily, through missions to towns and villages that needed clean water and medical assistance. Things as little as eyeglasses and water purification devices.
Recently, Scott has moved to the Yucatán to help out a pastor there build six churches throughout the region that will probably include orphanages and places for the indigent and elderly as well to stay. Scott is able to do this and fund his projects by working online with companies that he built and supports their computer systems. Like you, he has found that the Mexican people have embraced him with love and affection for what he can do for them with a little money and inspiration.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. While I had my own website before AuthorsDen, it was AuthorsDen that gave me visibility on the Internet and has so well kept track of all of my writing and posting all these years.
The collaboration with so many other authors here has also been invaluable. Because of AuthorsDen, if I google my name, I now get a wonderful collage of images of me, my books and a brief bio, followed by listing after listing of my work.
For all of those who have left, I hope they will come back. There is no finer place for authors on the Internet than here.

Like you, I was late in learning about Harriet Tubman. It wasn't until I was 40 years old that I began to hear about her and only recently, thanks to documentaries, have I learned more of her extraordinary life and courage.
What I found the most striking, was that late in life she acquired a stately home like Frederick Douglass that is still available to visit. Even today, her story is a beacon to young people who feel trapped in their situation and need some encouragement to pull themselves up by their boots straps.

I was afraid my hearing loss would affect my listening, but A Clear Blue Morning came through beautifully with all of those wonderful voices. It's sure to go to the top of the country charts.
When I was a doctoral student in 1971, acquiring my grandmother’s 17 inch black and white television set, from Morgantown, WV, I could only reach a channel in Wheeling and KDKA in Pittsburgh. As I dove into my studies, for distraction, I often tuned into favorite shows. My all-time favorite was the Porter Wagoner Show from Wheeling. And the star was a young Dolly Parton. I knew she was destined for fame right away because of her honest and home spun delivery of her songs.
Dolly has, in her short 80 years, become an institution with her name on more landmarks than any president. She is always generous and especially likes to share her songs like she did with Whitney Houston for her incredible performance on The Bodyguard. This is just one of her many collaborations and songs she has written for others.

Beautiful, precious memories of your grandparents and what you were taught from an early age. My family was poor but my dad hunted moose every year and kept a good many families fed through the cold hard winters in Newfoundland. I think about how many strangers they took in and made sure they were fed and warm. Our children today don't know about these things as most of them have never done without. Fortunately, I'm not close enough to hear those cries. But I certainly know that they exist. Fortunately, too, no child born in my extended family, to my knowledge, is crying.
I donate to those in need. But it has always been my wish that through education and equality, babies are not born out of ignorance and poverty. As some sort of comfort for teenage anxiety or peer pressure.
Once, in our lunchroom, two 15 year-old girls hired to work as interns during the summer discussed their babies with their supervisor. I knew that their mothers were bearing the burden of their children while they were learning about college while still in high school.
Fortunately, I've known of some who had children very early and still managed to complete college and have a career. But hard-working families with babies forced into poverty by billionaire greed is totally unacceptable.

Tks for your review Ron. I was raised by a scientist/inventor showing me stars and planets through telescopes we would oneday inhabit starting when I was two years old. Until I was age 17, I helped him do his experiments and many involved us getting to other planets as well as living on them. I love it. A simple way to approach the world. Since most progress in the world is good, the chances are, by being good, one will benefit throughout life.
But if you insist on not being good, and know it, understand the chance of having it come back to you in a way that will hurt you.
Based on the good karma that I've had in my life, I would say it is partly the result of my not judging people before I get to know them. And then not hating anyone by their behavior. Just try to understand why they behave badly if they do.

An interesting exploration of passion, compulsion, and sacrifce. We often set aside or abandon the cost of creation, be it good or bad needs to express. The process, just as 9 months in childbearing is a necessary cost/process, the end product is a testement to practicing one's purpose, ones sense of authenticity. Your peace speaks to all of the creative wills that are not hesitent in carrying out their needs to express. I've been working on a piece for some time now and may post it soon. Treasured Mishaps. An architect told me once that nature is the greatest landscaper. Why I left the wilderness around my new build home in 1980 a few blocks from his underground palace overlooking Atlanta from Bear Mountain.
To go one step further, nature is the greatest artist. When I saw your image, I immediately thought of Michelangelo. Exactly how he turned White marble into wife like humans was true remarkable and a labor of love – Agony and Ecstasy (biography).
When I arrived at Stanford before school opened in September 1966. I visited the museum and saw the works of Rodin in the garden.

Wonderful thoughts in this poem.
It's interesting how tragedies like this travel like lightning throughout the world now, but become yesterday's news in a couple of days. But for people of the Mystic Camp for girls, the tragedy will be remembered for a very, very long time and grieved.
So many missing still not found.
In 1889, a dam creating a lake for a prominent sporting club for the wealthy above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was poorly maintained and failed in a flood and killed 2200 people in Johnstown. Most were probably immigrants and quickly forgotten.

They closed the SSI Office near my home. There used to be long lines there and I recall going there with my partner one time and waiting in line until they told us we just had to give the paperwork to the guards. While others would stand outside in the midday sun for three or four hours.
I don't know where people go now. But with the cutbacks, they probably will have to go further than ever to actually meet with people to get their business done. Online works for only those with online services. I recall getting my Social Security by simply making a phone call. It is much harder now.

The plight of so many women with children these days with no real relief in sight. While we spend enormous amounts of money for war and greed, creating even more people left on the street with nowhere to turn, no clean water to drink or food to eat… Not even a place to lie down and sleep that is safe, dry and warm.
I once knew the director of the Star of Hope Mission for Women here in Houston. He was a quadriplegic, more paralyzed than I, but had a beautiful lawyer wife and two beautiful young children. He was able to get the wealthy board members and donations so that he could expand to a new facility. But, in spite of doubling their capacity, their waiting list was still over 20 women long and growing. I mostly have seen men in the streets, but there are women there, too, with children. It's sad that it has to happen, and your poem comes very close to what it must be really like.

I heard the plea and went there every weekend when I could for 3 years to soak up all the artistic beauty that lay there. But even then, it was too expensive to rent a decrepit old apartment with expensive parking for my car.

I have witnessed many people do a complete turnaround.
Some need kindness and enough to get their feet off the ground.
Love, hope, and compassion are what we all need.

We were born in love by spirit. This is why we are born to love, not to just enjoy life only for ourselves but to give glory unto the Creator and have a heart for the suffering. The fact that you spotlight this very essence is so deeply profoundly needed.... Sometimes when I go into my prayer closet the overflowing emotions for them is so profound I cannot stop the massive rivers of flow... We are born now at the greatest suffering in history, many cannot afford healthcare, housing because of this ever changing global uniting, wars and rumers of wars which make suffering and costs go up more for basic things, yet the greatest time in all history for open doors to be a light greater than ever. Everyone that i have encountered even if I had no money to give, a smile, a testimony of how I weathered different adversities and my outpouring of love changed their spirit, helped them take a load off and then they felt they were no longer shunned and powerless.....This exchange was always priceless. In fact we carry not anything when we leave except the goodness we have waved in love ripples...That is the legacy I want to leave. Thank you Judy as always for your balm of mercy~

Jellyroll (interesting name) isn't the first singer to be rescued by a good woman. And he certainly has talent beyond the first song that comes from a long way back, perhaps when he was singing as a child. He appears to have had or has an addictive personality that got him into all that trouble he describes in Save Me. Most in despair in the streets don't have that kind of talent.
I'll let the test of time determine whether he is the "most beloved" or just this year's CMA sensation. He doesn't appear to have a long life ahead of him. But according to Dion… "…but it seems the good they die young…"

I find delicacy and fragility in these graceful compassionate lines, Judy. The awareness in words is fascinatingly augmented by the painting you have done here. I find myself staring at this figure. If I take her in her wholeness she seems a duality. Her body less regal, her hair accouterment producing some kind of royalty. But it is her face that captures me most of all…if I put my finger covering her left side of face (my right side of her face), she matches her head piece and feeling of ‘crown’ — a bit indifferent to the words of this writing. But if I cover her right side (my left) she appears sad. All that difference is in the eyes, for her nose and mouth stay the same. The power of a person’s face is in the eyes, more than anything I feel. So your painting is every bit as compelling as your writing here. Bravo* ~~ djl

We can do better. Here in Texas, the state had an $89 billion surplus. Our good governor rich from a $200 million settlement when a tree fell on him and put him in a wheelchair, has decreed that the money will come back to property owners and landlords with lower taxes.
He ignores the fact that the homeless are growing in the cities like Houston and the city is scrambling to figure out how to move them so they won't be so unsightly to all of us homeowners. Instead of providing adequate housing, food and other necessities of life.

It is hard to get caregivers those of us who can pay. For those on the street, there is literally no one. They die every day for lack of simple care that anyone can give, if only their time. More angels are needed, please. Don't just donate money. Get active and involved. Don't be afraid to let your hands on those in great need.

Judy,
people like us that are truly feeling empathic people are deeply affected by the suffering. When I can't assist someone I pray and that has powerful power in the universe and heavens. There are so many deep seated problems as to how they got there but the main thing is lack of finances, churches that won't be what they are called to be which is a light and assistance for the world, although some help, childhood abuse, broken families and some addiction. When i do interact with them i feel i am doing this for the Lord and all He's done for me. California is a perfect example how they want to throw money at programs but they continue to destroy the middle class and they want dependency. They truly don't want to fix the system, the elites control and then throw a bone every now and then. I feel our hearts and the purpose of the church must revive, awaken. You are deeply precious in all the entire world, to the Father and all creation ):

It takes a special person to stop whatever they are doing and help a poor orphan make it in this largely uncaring and cruel world. You are that kind of person. Many more angels like you are needed for the world is filled with orphans, poor and people in the street.
