I had to live the stories in this book before I could share them with the world. I'm glad I was able to so do at a time when my home state of Georgia has played, and continues to play, such a pivotal role in the United States' history. My hope is these true-to-life stories of struggle, survival, love, and reconciliation help readers gain insights and establish solutions to the various challenges facing not only Americans, but people around the world.

I was looking for reviews of my short stories for my upcoming short story book when I came upon this encyclopedia. I have A friend, Cary Wintz, who has also written a history of the Harlem Renaissance. Last year and the McCleary Symposium, I wrote a poem, The Roaring 20s, that has brought a great deal of search activity to my website.
I haven't heard from you for a while, but it looks like you've been very busy and successful. I will be using your review of my short story, Hit and Run, on my back cover.

The wisdoms of Mr. DuBois are profound and timeless. The fact that his words and insights to finding purpose have been immortalized in a book is genuis. This is another great work by this author that not only should be in eveery school, but every home as well for generations to come.

The moment my eyes see *Aberjhani has added..." my world stops and I access AD. In my lifetime Aberjhani will be recognized as one of our time's best writers. My first thought when I heard it on the radio driving to work was that it was a terrorist attack. Work generally stopped at Texas Southern University that morning as we huddled around television sets watching it all unfold.
While I will never write a poem as eloquently as you have published in Essence, I wrote one shortly after the tragedy…I Witness. For those of us that were watching on TV and saw the planes hit the buildings and then watching them collapse, we were all, so many, eyewitnesses to the event.

I don't have time today to read the whole article, but from your summary here I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I am amazed at how many people still think that everything is okay and working the way it should. Including members of my own family who should know better.
You stated those studies showing that the general public is getting more and more fed up. The attendance at the overblown 250 at the Mall and the snippet of the speech that I heard is getting people more and more concerned about the direction we are taking.
The best way to address it is to get everyone voting and voting their conscience, not their party or their neighbor or family member suggestion.
Keep up the good word. I'm trying to as well.

Per your instructions, I went to your beautifully engineered website and listened to the winged fingertips of Thelonius Monk.
While I always enjoyed gospel music with its uplifting messages, but not to the point of worship, and the early message from black rock 'n' roll like Bo Diddly and Little Richard that struck a primal cord in me, I never fully embraced the creative freedom and genius of jazz.
My little tech and teacher's college embraced all kinds of art to come to campus to perform and enlighten us. We were mostly common folk, the first in our families to go to college, and relatively uneducated.
One time, a progressive jazz band from Chicago came to perform for us. They had a flat tire on the way and arrived about an hour late, making most of us in the audience fidget. It took them a while to set up. They played for about 15 minutes, and when they saw that the audience was not responding at all, packed up and left the stage.
By contrast, a famous classical guitarist from either Mexico or Spain came to campus to play for us on his acoustic guitar. We sat captivated the whole time as his fingers on the strings reached the highest points of the balcony and his staccato playing made our hearts sing.
And then, one time, I had a late night date in Washington, DC. We entered a jazz club and the only place to sit was right alongside the jazz band. It was impossible to talk with her and it was the only date that I had with her.
Forgive me, for my lack of understanding and sophistication.

Mining The Past For Hope and Motivation in The Present (Article) - 12/10/2025 1:56:30 PM
Always interested in civil rights, I have been amazed at the number of stories from history that were deliberately buried in the past that have come to the fore again in the 21st century. A time when scholars and explorers can unearth the atrocities that existed but were swept under the rug.
A couple of weeks ago, I watched The American Revolution, another masterpiece by Ken Burns and his staff. I'm grateful for PBS to still be there to be able to present it, all 12 hours of fascinating detail from original sources.
Not what I was taught in school. But much better. Whatever WOKE is, I'm all for it. I'll let the bigots squirm and try to suppress and regress, but in the end, especially with AI, the truth will prevail.
Finally, to have your work allied with Du Bois and Camus is a great honor.

A very appropriate and thorough coverage of Malcolm X’s life and influence upon his 100th anniversary. So apropos to these times when the truth is being challenged and we need leaders like him to stand up to the abuse of civil rights. And very well written I might add.
I never had any ill feelings towards Malcolm X, perhaps because I read what another great writer, Alex Haley, wrote of him in Playboy and read the Playboy interview of him. On the West Coast, I admired the Black Panthers for their also strong stance when it came for standing up for black people. I was fortunately able to bring Alex Haley to Texas Southern University for a fundraiser in 1982. Where he enthralled the audience with his description of how important it is for the underprivileged to get an education and how predominantly black colleges are able to provide that need for learning.
Recently, I’ve been watching The Godfather of Harlem. While fictionalized, the story does portray Malcolm X in a very good light and ends with his tragic death over rivalry among the Muslims seeking power rather than drawing together for a greater cause. Something we sorely need today.

I have always written poetry and appreciated good poetry when I read it, mostly in school. But I entered hard-core engineering and found that writing poetry was a release from the regular of engineering discipline.
But unlike you I was never educated in poetry. Never even took a course. And I never followed poetry circles like you have. I've set myself on producing a poem a week that I post on my website and on AD. And that is it.
I didn't know that there was a poetry month, but thank you for letting me know. But there are so many national months and days, these days that it's really hard to keep up with all of them. But people like to celebrate more than I do, so I will let them celebrate and I will just continue to write poetry and try to find good poetry to read or good lyrics in songs like almost every one of Bob Dylan's back in the day.

My thanks to Aberjhani not only for celebrating National Poetry Month so energetically, but to sharing my work while doing it, and linking me up with Authors Den, which is new to me.
As Aberjhani notes, I have many reservations about the cultural, political and personal impacts of Artificial Intelligences, whether they be automated language generators, high powered data analysis tools, or computerized decision support systems.
There are many discussions going on about the use of AI in assisting, imitating, plagiarizing or potentially even polluting authorship. I think Aberjhani's AI Chat Salon is an admirable experiment in developing new practices and establishing boundaries. He openly uses AI to help develop his essays, but also takes full custodianship and responsibility of the texts produced.
As yet, I have not published any of the texts that have come out of my explorations of Large Language Models, but I am considering it. If I do, I shall be open and clear about the history of prompts and iterations it took to produce the result.
AI can probably be a great boon to the production of a great deal of repetitive technical writing. I have been burdened in jobs earlier in my life with the recurring tailoring of established language to adapt to specific cases, and much of that should be greatly automated.
However, I still find AIs lacking not only in common sense and good error and fact checking, but in consciousness, taste, creativity, and the ability to deal flexibly with all the ambiguities, passions, pains and anomalies of the embodied life. It is useful as an aid to analysis, but I continue to distrust its outputs as legitimate art.

It's interesting that you start the article in 2021 with issues that were breaking at that time and now seem to be ancient history. But revisited, in a couple of cases by the current administration of the United States. Shying away from alliances, cracking down on health science creating cures for diseases like Covid and not punishing war crimes committed by powerful military regimes.
And, while educational developments are exploding in the 21st century, with distance learning like the Khan Academy, and the Socratic mentoring available for free with YouTube and step-by-step procedures educating the public at their own pace. We are rapidly leaving brick and mortar and traditional lectures for walless learning and hands on experience. All of this, rightly, does not gain much attention.
AI promises much that may revolutionize arts and science, yet our understanding of political process is mired in the past rather than the future as you suggest. What most people want but seem powerless to move toward.

It’s good to see you posting again and especially an article on such an honored and influential writer like Octavia E. Butler.
I must confess I’ve never read her work and also that I have never read many of the great science fiction writers. In a way that has allowed me to be unique rather than trying to follow their ways of writing about the future of science and technological development. But I’ve always been interested in what will happen and much of my writing is predictive like Butler’s was.
But my writing intends to be utopian rather than dystopian like Parable of the Sower. Still, I wrote of fires in my most read novel,
The Last Wanderer: Last Man on Earth. Those fire is raged throughout the whole continent, caused by the swings from long droughts to flooding rains fueled by climate change and with no one to put them out. Similar to what Butler wrote from what I read without reading the book, but not the same.
It is sad and ironic that along with one of the most greedy communities on the West Coast, the Palisades and Malibu coast, as well as the black middle class neighborhood of Eaton where Butler’s legacy resides were both hit by the increasing Santa Ana winds of global warming.

Quote number four struck especially home to me. In a land of majority rule with only two parties, the idea of representation of all, often is squeezed by exclusion and collusion. I believe in the 21st century the mobility caused by many problems will result in more homogeneous and trusting world where all the naysayers have died.
In your last quote, I believe referred to the inequality when it came to prevention of the Coronavirus and its variants taking so many lives from the unprotected, but hard-working service workers in the trenches, followed by the infection of many of their families.
It should have backfired for the naysayers earlier, but didn't. It appears that Omicron is finally catching up with those who thought they were immune.

O'Connor certainly challenged herself to produce work of meaningful substance while writing under difficult and often painful circumstances.

Having been stopped by police for simply "riding with color," including one time been driven from the airport in Austin by the owner of an energy conservation consulting firm in his new Cadillac with the president of Texas Southern University in the front seat and the Comptroller with me in the back, headed for important meetings that day.
Even futuristic soap operas like Star Wars have evil on the "dark side." Psychological experiments with children with dolls show a definite bias towards lighter skin, even among dark skinned children doing the selecting. For 30 years at a dominantly black institution I noticed that fairer skinned Blacks were often given promotions easier and that slang among the staff often referred to others with the same kind of color prejudice in the society as a whole.
Police brutality is definitely the new lynching. Some of it dutifully performed by black officers. Until society as a whole can follow Martin Luther King in thinking, that they should, "Judge the quality of a person not by the color of their skin, but by the quality of their character," racial discrimination will continue of its own accord.

I'm glad I read the whole three parts. I can't say, not being a very good poetry critic, that I understood all that you were portraying in the poem's three parts, but the beautiful images you created give me a clue.
You made me think of the Rainbow Coalition fostered by Jesse Jackson but forgotten and picked up by the gay movement. I am grateful for my experience with the other side of the world allowing a refugee from Vietnam who is very talented and politically totally in sync with me about everything into my home 30 years ago.
If we don't make an attempt to get to know those different from us, we will miss out on a very rich experience and live our lives in ignorance and poverty of thinking.

A very scathing cynical poem about the way things are. I can see this as poetry critics' dream, but not one of those clear minded, simpler protest poems that resonated with the reader not as sophisticated as you.

“All Night in Savannah the Wind Wrote Poetry” was first published here on AD in 2007, then in book THE BRIDGE SILVERS WINGS (2009), and later in THE RIVER OF WINGED DREAMS (2010). Since those early days, it has been amazing to see how different people embrace and celebrate the poem. Such as actress C. Niambi Steele, who did me the honor of performing a dramatic recital of it for an online poetry celebration hosted during the pandemic by Savannah State University.
Author Rosy Cole, in her extraordinary review of BRIDGE, had this to say about it: “…Here, our collective experience is starkly rendered. The transparency of one culture overlays another, and another, to form the daguerreotype of possibilities that is homo sapiens, interacting, almost like the elements themselves, with the created world and modified only by context and its imperatives.

Vincent's boots, like his art, were made to last -
leather soles caked with mud, that's all there was
for an awkward sod who didn't sell a single painting

Growing up in the coldest part of the United States and experiencing many snowing fronts all winter, too long, and even cold and rainy summers, I can relate. The chilling, killing nature of winter also preserves, under ice and snow, all the seeds of upcoming amazing regrowth from spring into summer, and then, the abundance of harvest.

Goodbye is perhaps inappropriate for someone who's phenomenon will never die, and I think your words wrestle with this ambivalence. We mourn the death of a percieved friend, like Princess Diana. yet we know that their essence will not diminish, fade or tarnish. He was almost like Christ (I mean no disrespect here) in the sense that he knew mess and ugliness well, yet sowed grace and beauty into others' lives and ignited their capacities to dream. And this is his legacy. Grace and beauty always conquer in the end, even amid all the turmoil that dogs his story still... and conceivably because of, and inspite of it. I have written quite a different Michael Jackson piece which I hope will not offend, because it asks of him quite simply "Well, Michael... what's it like to be dead?!" I mean no flippancy here, or cruelty. It's an honest question we want to put to those who impact us most, who share both our humanity and our divinity in some ways. Penned in your inimitable AberJ style whose life-blood ink always runs a deeper shade of regal red, blue and purple. Another write that transcends. TY xx

The author poem is not just that, it is the raw pain, disillusion and at the end the rebellion not less painful, not less real.

Aberjhani - I share with you the hope that our 44th president will be a true leader who can forgo the myopic side issues of many and truly lead the U.S. and all humanity to a higher level of existence. He impresses me with a balance possessed of both inspiration and common sense.
Wonderful last stanza:

lift your songs like leaves of silken prophecies,

I hope that the 44th President of America keep his promise to help 230.000 War Veterans and that it is done with realities and not with lip service.
Our hope candles were off for a long time and President Elect Obama lighted them again for many of my brothers and sisters, it is time to welcome them home...it has been a long long time indeed of waiting.

The democrats no matter who they are have one agenda in mind. Make a law that will keep abortion legal throughout this great Nation. This has been there objective and now that they control every branch of the government it will be just the beginning of the end to freedom of conservative radio but not TV or the news media who are in the pockets of the democrats. Talk about mind control, you will live to see everything he has promised come true and a once great Nation will fall to its knees to the liberal think tanks that are out to socialize this country and have but one voice in Washington and the end of the two party system they hope. I pray God intervenes when this comes to fruition.
