What a wonderful winter memory. It seems like a fantasy today. But people actually used sleighs back in the early 20th century because roads were unplowed and cars could not travel after the snow reached a certain depth. Farmers who had horses, dusted off their sleighs that had been kept in the barn, hitched up their draft horses, and made the long trip through the snow to church or to town for winter supplies. It helped to have a buffalo robe or deerskin in addition to blankets because the ride could be very cold.
My mother told of her riding in the family sleigh during wintertime. When she was born, the midwife had to come in a sleigh on January 2 the deep snow in north-central Wisconsin.

We learned to practice good deeds in Boy Scouts, but that's one we never did. What a wonderful thing those scouts did for your family. And your Momma certainly spread the generosity by making sure that no one that she knew went without a Thanksgiving dinner.

Teresa, it's good to see you posting again. I know what you mean. But here in Texas, with the rodeo coming up, there are plenty authentic cowgirl who come from all over the state to join in the celebration and carry that flag as well as do a number of the real competition like barrel racing as well as the men.
Long ago and far away, my brother took for his bride a freshman cowgirl who was two times Miss Wisconsin rodeo on her performing horse, Ebony, wearing outfits made almost entirely with sequins sewed by her mother. In that era, 1965 they were bellbottoms and probably outside her boots. When she went out east, she adapted and taught European style riding to clients.

Wow! This is a GREAT tribute to Grandpa Ryel. He will be forever a part of you and your character. My Grandpa Favorito did the same. He was at his last stages of life and I visited him in a hospital. I pinned my captains bars on his pajamas and said, "Thank you Grandpa." He said, "Thank you Johnnyboy but I got to go right now. There is nothing wrong with me but these people here are very sick." So he walked from one patient to another visiting each one, tending to there needs. Reading the Bible to some and just taking and/or bring water to another. That was my grandpa and my inspiration. My Grandpa Eric, too, was a man of God. He changed my life with his open arms, wisdom, and love. To this day, Teresa, I remember vividly the absorbing Bible stories, and accounts of his life, he shared with me as a young boy while I was sitting near him by the fireplace in the basement of his home in Lincolnwood Illinois. I know the feeling. I met my wife and our 20th high school reunion. We had a real fling, nothing like our high school days when she was going steady with another classmate. Unfortunately, the reality was much less than the dream, and we divorced at her request, not mine, three years later.

I recall going to a small village outside Cairo, Egypt that reminded me about what life must have been like for Mary and Joseph. We were invited to join a family for dinner. The town was surrounded by an old stone wall and no cars were allowed inside. When we entered the main gate there were donkeys and horses with wooden cats to transport the merchants. Other farm animals such as sheep and geese were roaming the dirt streets accompanied by the locals. The sight the sounds, the smells were all part of God's natural world which was indeed heart warming. The people were all so friendly that we felt unusually welcome and quite happy walking in this strange village.
Your poem took me back to this town which gave me a small but vivid vision of Christ birth. Thank you Teresa! Merry Christmas to you!

I love humorous Christmas poems. As for the passing on of good tidings in lower insurance rates, both of my helpers have exceeded in getting better, lower cost, insurance through that funny little website. Isn't that a miracle?
I would prefer that my packages were delivered by the Flying Purple People Eater, that way we have fewer mouths to feed, reduce air traffic, and whop those Amazonian monster drones invading every aspect of our lives.

If only it were true. 95% of indians wiped out, through greed, theft and jealousy. Us europeans took advantage of their goodwill, Washington, Adams... decreed they were to be wiped out. The holocaust never managed to reach this level of annihilation of an indigenous race. The Indians call it Unthanksgiving day. The worse event in human history.
The few that survived only did so by being slaves and abused in the most vile way.

You have certainly described the sanitized account although the designated holiday didn't come about until much later.
It still makes me sad to think about how the friendly, naïve Native Americans were taken in by the invading Europeans, robbed of their land and their dignity as "human beings," and eventually slaughtered by the millions for trying to fight back.

Wonderful thoughts about a wonderful person. I hope she really existed.
I had thoughts of the woman, a Vietnamese émigré, all hunched over with age, who I saw walking the streets many mornings for over twenty years on my way to work pushing her shopping cart filled with aluminum cans. I know she lived in the area with relatively nice homes. I have the feeling that she paid for her home and her childrens' educations through college with those cans she picked up every day.

You've covered them well––all those childhood superstitions which seemed so magical at the time, but now somehow, pale with the wisdom of age. Makes me wonder how they all got started. I guess, as children, we tend to make up ways to make magic. If they are interesting enough, they passed by word-of-mouth from child to child until they cover the whole of childhood existence.
