     Early Morning Reflections

Early in the morning he sits on the balcony of his hotel room that overlooks the teal blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and watches the waves as they roll in one after the other. With a cup of coffee in his hand, his feet propped up on the railing, sunglasses hiding his diamond eyes that would reflect the color of the water, he thinks about his life, about love. He understands that people do things sometimes for selfish reasons and then try to justify their behavior. He finds it unfortunate that his family was torn apart at a time when it should have been stronger than ever; it should have lasted forever. Not once but twice deceived, his guard is up, his walls high, he doesn't have much to give, but somewhere deep inside the inherent desire to want to love and be loved keeps him breathing in, breathing out, reaching up.

She sees him. She understands him...the very heart of who he is and what he's about; what he places value on, and what brings him pleasure. If they had seen, they would have stayed with him forever. They would have been satisfied with one moment to be in his presence, in his arms. His worth is obvious, right there in his eyes, his face, his smile, his words. Somewhere deep inside she longs to show him what truth is supposed to feel like; to prove to him that "real" can be wonderful, demonstrate that she was made for him. A man worthy of respect whose eyes look like home; she had given up on finding that. In fact, it surprised her when she noticed him. She doesn't need much, she doesn't need him, but she wants him even if it's just one moment in his arms. She sits in her living room thousands of miles away and yet it feels like he is right there; for her it has felt that way from the moment they met. She closes her eyes, she sees his face. She opens her eyes, she sees his face. Regardless of whether they ever meet again, he is with her forever and for her everything has changed.

The Heart's Way by Rebecca McKeehan

Love is universal and not limited to the most perfect among us. In this collection of romantic short stories and poetry, love comes to those who are decidedly imperfect, who possess very real human flaws, scars, and challenges. Awaiting us as we are.
