Let's have a look at the explosion of the so-call private prison system in the United States. It is not a pretty picture.
The United States has more people incaerated as a percentage of population that any country in the world, more than China, the Soviet Union, more than any other country. Why is this?
Yes, it's a disgrace how privatization of the prison system and the interlocking of judges, lawyers and private contractors feathering their nests has created a situation where youngsters are introduced to prison too soon, and, as a result of harsh penalties for victimless crimes, resulted in warehousing a part of our population that least needs being criminalized for trying to survive.
I personally know two women who were imprisoned unfairly. Upon returning to society they needed my help to get employment and housing, something that is quite easily denied to anyone who went to prison, regardless if they were railroaded or not.
