What if you could relive different stages of your life?
What if life weren’t a continuum from birth to death? What if the different stages of our lives formed a circle around us like pieces of a pie? Standing there, we could twirl around and be whatever age we wanted. Right now I’m in my old age, and that is where I usually dwell.
But earlier this morning I was a child, joyfully body-surfing with my Dad. I could feel the waves carrying me to shore, smell the ocean, and hold my Dad’s hand when a wave deposited us on shore. A few seconds later we were looking for the next wave to ride. What joyful summers
On the other hand, there were some excruciating times of almost unbearable loss, and some times of quiet desperation. When I visit one of those stages, I briefly acknowledge it and then quickly move to another time and place. While I don’t want to sugarcoat my life or rewrite history, I like to concentrate on the positives.
And there are many positives. I love most of the various stages of my life and am particularly happy to spend time with those who couldn’t make the whole journey with me. Friends call this reminiscing, but can you feel the ocean spray or touch a loved one in a memory? No, I’m convinced I’m actually taking part in those stages and adventures, living the dream, so to speak
