He walked through the dark with only the light of the moon to guide him. He knew there was sunshine coming but it was midnight and only the light that was reflected from the moon served to help him see where he was going.
Marvin had decided to take a walk through the woods but with only the moonlight to guide him he soon found himself lost. At one point he thought maybe he should simply sit down and wait for the sunrise but he kept walking. Crickets were singing through the night and from somewhere in the distance he could hear the occasional cry of an owl.
Eventually Marvin did sit down on a rock and tried to regroup himself. He felt the cool night air gently caressing his cheek and found himself listening to the crickets and anticipating the cry of the owl.
Then he laid back and put his hands behind his head as he stared at the moon, the stars and the occasional cloud that floated overhead. The song of the crickets soon put him to sleep.
He had a dream about an old oak tree that was cut down for timber. The problem was the fact that he was the tree and the pain was excruciating. He was lying on the ground, unable to get up. Men with power saws and other equipment were noisily working all around him and then they were cutting him. He had grown from a sapling and returned oxygen for carbon dioxide thus doing his part to keep the balance of nature and now he was asking why they would return his giving in such a painful way.
He found himself praying to God to take the pain away but seemed to receive no answer. This, he thought, must be how Christ felt while hanging on the cross.
It was then that Marvin woke up to see the sun rising over the hills in the east. With its glorious light he realized that he had not been as lost as he thought. Before long he was at home but the dream of the old oak tree was still on his mind.
He wondered how man could be so selfish as to destroy the very balance of nature that kept him alive. This is an answer he may never figure out.
