Excerpt from Chapter 4 of Whatever! A baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age

To be fair, I should say there's another opinion out there on why some people think "older employees" aren't as marketable.

 1)  One might argue that we lack drive and motivation and have bad attitudes.

But I can counter that by asking how much spirited energy you would have if you felt like your work wasn't valued or you keep getting passed over for promotion to a younger, less experienced co-worker?

2)  Another might say we stay on the job too long and need to move out of the way so someone else can have an opportunity.

Could it be possible that we might be committed for the good of the compny?  Furthermre, statistics show older workers tend to have lower rates of absenteeism so productivity levels remain consistent.  I won't name names but I've worked with plenty of young folks who found secret places to hide so they wouldn't be called upon to do their jobs.

3)  The real cynical ones would argue we don't think as quickly or clearly as we used to, we're hard-of-hearing and it takes longer to learn new skills, especially new technology.

O.K., so I admit it takes me awhile to process information these days but I have a bona fide excuse.  One of the symptoms of menopause is short-term memory loss.  Yes, I do have a problem when it comes to having proficient computer skills but at least I'm smart enough to rely on my younger, highly technical co-workers to help me.  As far as being hard-of-hearing, did anyone every consider that I just might have been IGRNORING YOU???

I agree with your assessment of the "older" worker. Too many companies take this valuable resource for granted.

I know how it is, but I have had some younger bosses who were nothing but wonderful; on the other hand, I have had some who were horrid; it all depends on who you get. When you do get a good boss, consider yourself blessed; that is my philosophy!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karne Lynn. :D

Good write!
