This is another assignment for a Yahoo writing group that I am involved with. It is nice to move the pen and get back with writing. I have missed it so!
For Wednesday's assignment I am to write about a talent I have that helped to create and raise money for someone else!
The talent I had when I was younger was balance and being able to ride my bike skillfully and successfully. I started riding my bike when I was just Fourteen years old. I entered into some races, to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy and then the American Brain Tumor Association when I was Eighteen going on Nineteen years old.
Back in 1989, after my diagnosis, I had felt trapped and had wanted to contribute, the month was August and I was diagnosed in May. I was starting to feel some of the effects of the symptoms of the so called "tumor" by then which we later found out was a "cavernous hemangioma" in the brainstem and I am so very lucky to have my life today!
The main problem I was having was vision! I would see double when I looked in certain directions and it got to the point that I KNEW when I looked a certain way, which Image I saw was the Correct one to see! That is how I survived with my driving nd was able to stay on the road for so long! I adapted!
The never-ending headaches started though, then I had to stop and take a breather. I had to realize my life was changing, for good or bad. I thought I was dying, so did Mom I found out later, years later of course.
Anyway, because of this factor I rode my 10-speed bike until radiation day which was October 3rd, 1990. I had the full amount of radiation allowed to the brain. No more riding bikes for me! We are talking of getting me a 3 wheeler when we are rich and have the money! I had the then New Gamma-Knife Radiation which was when you receive your radiation ALL in one day or dose. It costs a pretty penny, $80,000 if I remember Dad telling me correctly. I think it made it from cancerous to benign but I think Mom thinks it was benign from the beginning. We shall never know.
Point is:I am alive and well right now, to an extent.
It was October 5th, 1989 and I rode for the American Brain Tumor Association in Ft. Worth, Texas. They gace me a yellow shirt with a cyclist on front wearing a helmet. It was a really hard course because downtown Ft. Worth has so many hills! I stayed with it though and continued! I did not want to let the people down. I was really proud of myself when I finished!
Momma was even there, cheering me on at each point in the race! She has such a good soul! Bless you Momma! I have never realized until now what a good and wonderful person you are to me!
