My mother was from Brooklyn so while most kids got bedtime stories we got Brooklyn stories. Brooklyn stories were a lot better than bedtime stores. My mother would tell us stories about growing up in Brooklyn. We heard the same stories over and over but they were good stories so I liked to listen to them. One of the stories was that my mother and her girl friends were jumping rope when this man came up to them and said little girls do you want some candy and he would try to get them to come into his hallway. My mother told my grandmother about the man asking them if they wanted candy. My grandmother said next time the man asks you if you want candy, you tell your girlfriends to keep jumping rope and you sneak off and come get me. A few days later, the girls were jumping rope and the man came and asked them if they wanted candy and my mother went off to get my grandmother.
She went to the house and said Mom the guy is near my girlfriends asking us if we want candy. My Grandma said wait and she filled this big sock full of coins. My Mom and Grandma went around the block where the girls were jumping rope. My mother pointed out the guy that was asking the girls if they wanted candy. My Grandma told my mother to go over by her girlfriends. My Grandma went over to the man and said hey mister do you have any candy for me. The man did not know what to say and my grandmother started whacking him in the head with the sock full of coins. She kept hitting the man with the sock full of coins. My Grandma was saying come on mister do you have any candy for me. My Grandmother beat the guy up pretty good. Then some construction men that were working on a house in the neighborhood saw my grandmother hitting the guy and said what is the matter lady is this guy bothering you. My Grandmother said this guy is trying to get these girls alone in the hallway. The construction men came down the block and beat the guy up a little more. Then my Grandfather and Uncles came home from work and they asked my Grandma what was going on my Grandma said this is the guy that was trying to get the girls to go in the hallway with him. My Grandfather and Uncles beat him until he could barely walk. My mother said they never saw that guy again. She said the last we saw of the guy he was wobbling down the street to get away from everyone that was beating him up.
