Everybody is crying today. They are all sad because the phone rang in the middle of the night. It rings a lot in the daytime but they don’t all cry when it rings in the daytime.
I am trying ever so hard to be good today. Aunty Kay said I should be a good girl. She said it is very important; that I must be the best that I can be. I am going to be so good I might burst from trying so hard.
Hmm..that might not be such a good idea. If I burst it’ll make a mess and then I’ll be in trouble. And being in trouble isn’t being good.
There are a lot of people at our house today. I don’t like it much. It’s very confusing because they are all wearing the same clothes and it makes it hard for me to find my mummy when all the ladies are wearing the same dresses. I can see my daddy though, even when he is wearing the same clothes as all the other men, because he is big and tall like a tree and ever so strong as well. Daddy is sad too. I don’t like it when daddy is sad.
There’s a lady in our kitchen making tea and buttering bread. She is called Aunty. I know this because I have heard lots of people calling her
Aunty. It’s a funny name for a big lady with a big apron and a red face, but it must be right because she always answers them when they call her.
We are all going out soon, but this aunty lady is staying behind to make ready for when we get back because we will all be starving by then, people always are. I heard Susan telling mummy this and mummy seemed glad that the aunty lady was going to be staying here. I wonder if she has been naughty and that is why she has to stay behind?
Oh dear, all these people and I can’t find Grandma. I wonder where she is? She won’t like it with all these people here either. Grandma doesn’t
like crowds you know. She told me. She said that she likes them even less since Grandpa went to play with the angels in Heaven.
Heaven is a place in the sky you know, where you go to when you get old and tired and die.
Of course you only get to go there if you’ve been good. Grandpa was very good and he went there, although why he wanted to play with angels
when he was so very tired I don’t know? He was always too tired to play with me...
Oh no! They’ve all started crying again. There is a big car outside and it has a big box and flowers in it. It’s very big...I wonder what’s inside?
There are a lot of flowers on the car, all very pretty. There are some that say real words. Oh look, there is a big one made from pink flowers and it says G-R-A-N-D-M-A.
“Mummy, why did somebody send a car with a box and some flowers with grandma’s name on? Is it her birthday?”
