The Flies

That wretched Richard Fly looked me in the eyes, it flew up to my nose and bit me!!! Argh!!! It really does bite hard!!!

I brushed that Richard Fly off my nose. I've got to find out what it's all about once and for all! So, I walked across the street to Richard's house and knocked on the front door.

A very sweet little lady (Richard's wife) opened the door and I asked her if I could see her husband.

"I wish I knew where he is," she said with tears in her eyes.

"Richard just walked out into the dawn two days ago. He told me he would like to start his morning walks a little earlier before he would get ready for work, but he has never returned from his walk! I'm worried sick! I have already filed a Missing Person Report with the police department," she answered.

She also told me Richard has been suffering from the early stage of Dementia, and sometimes he would wander aimlessly in the streets, not knowing who or where he was.

"The police are going to release his photo to the press and ask for the public's help," she continued to tell me.

I was stunned! I really did not want to let this sweet little lady know that her husband, Richard, might have turned into a small Richard Fly. What if what I had just seen was not true ? When was the last time I visited an eye specialist to have my eyes examined? The last time was five years ago - when I needed a pair of reading glasses.

I bit my tongue, and bid good day to Richard's little old lady and told her I would keep an eye out for her husband. I told her if I ever see Richard I would bring him home to her. She looked at me with those depressive bedroom eyes and I almost wanted to give her a big hug and kiss her already.

What a sweet woman she is! She is so different from Marybeth! This is the kind of woman whom I could love, but only too bad she is married to Richard. What a pity! I came back home and found those damn flies were still flying and buzzing around. The place looked disgusting!

XXX XXX XXX

Now, back to the present: I must get dressed and go to the store. Richard or not, I need to put these miserable buggers to rest. I need to buy myself a fly bat. I ask Salesman Paul at the Home Depot for a large size fly bat but he says it only comes in one size. I might as well buy two instead!

As soon as I'm back home, I immediately start swatting the little hoarders that are still lingering in my house. Those fly bats sure come in handy. I slam the bats down on them, killing them one after another until I'm satisfied that my house is finally free of the buggers.

OMG!!! This is a much harder job than manning the cement mixer at work! Those little pests tire me out completely. I jump into the shower and give myself a good clean well deserved wash. I might as well head off to bed now.

Ah! I am so happy that finally, I can get a good night's sleep. I close my eyes and begin to doze off to my dreamland, when... Suddenly, far away in a distance, I can hear them. Buzzing. Again!

I open my eyelids with all my might and stare into the darkness! I cannot see anything, but I can hear the noise!

Will they know where to find me if I pulled the cover over myself? I instinctively pull the cover over my entire body.

"C'mon, Henry! These are only flies! Don't tell me a grown man, like you, is afraid of flies," I could hear a voice talking to me.

"No, you don't know about these flies! They bite!" I answer the voice in my mind. I don't dare to make any sudden noise or answer out loud or else those flies would know I'm underneath the covers.

"Hahaha!!! Henry, you're such a coward!" The voice laughs, mocking me.

"Who's that talking to me? Who are you?" I am now convinced that there's someone inside my room, and he knows that I am underneath the blanket.

My fly bats! Where are my fly bats?!

I try searching for them desperately but in vain. Now I remember I have left them on the kitchen table. I must go over there to get my bats!

I hold my blanket over my head, covering my body, and slide down from the side out of my bed onto the floor, and crawl slowly into the kitchen. All the while I make sure I am fully concealed by my blanket. As I inch towards the kitchen, a couple of the flies attempt to make their way underneath the blanket, but I swipe them off.

The way to the kitchen is now like an eternal road - a very long journey as I inch slowly towards it. I have finally arrived at the kitchen, pushing open the door and switching on the lights, and - lo and behold! - the place is packed with flies!

Why? Why oh why have they chosen my house to have a fly party?

I am now more furious than I am in fear. I stand up and walk over to get hold of the two fly bats and begin swinging and slamming them down on those wretched flies!

"You dirty bastards!" I slam the bats down on them, killing them dead - a whole bunch at a time! They charge at me like I was a beehive, clinging onto me and biting me, leaving bloody trails of bite marks on my skin. I never knew flies had strong teeth! I wave my bats - my only weapons of defence - at them like a madman.

"Get out of here!" I yell at them. After a while, they seem all gone. I proceed to close all my windows, and front door, back door, you name it, I close it and seal it with the electrical tape for good measure!

I take the dead flies to the washroom and flush them down the toilet to give them a good water burial. I wash and clean the fly bats as well. Suddenly, another current of buzzing noise from somewhere in the house begins to flow into my ears!

I dash over to the living room and found the little buggers trooping in from the chimney through the fireplace!

"You goddamn assholes!" I shouted at them, and immediately start up a fire in the fireplace.

"Burn yourselves to hell on your way down, you assholes!"

The coast seems clear now, I guess I may finally get to sleep in peace. I lay my tired body on to the bed, but for some reason, I keep thinking about Marybeth. It seems like it's the only time in many years that I actually found myself worrying about her. I wonder about all the trips that she has been taking.

Where is Marybeth now when all this is happening? I am beginning to have concerns for her safety which I did not have for a long time. I pray to God she is safe, wherever she may be. I am beginning to miss her already.

I must have fallen asleep mid worry last night as when I opened my eyes it was morning once again. I am happy to wake up and find that I'm still alive after the fly attack last night. I drive myself to the Home Depot once again. My good friend and salesman, Paul, seems startled at all the bite marks he sees on my face and body.

"WHOA!!! What happened to you, Henry? You look terrible! Have you gone hunting?"

"They are bite marks left by the flies," I answered. "Do you have any tents?" I figure I might as well set up a tent in my living room, just to guard my house. With the tent, the flies won't be able to get to me when I sleep in it.

"For three people." I still have my concerns about Marybeth's weight problem. She would be taking up enough space for two, and I, just one. I figure her into the space equation even though I am not certain of her whereabouts at the moment. I hope she had not turned into a fly and gotten herself killed in my fit of anger last night. I know Richard may not go back home to his beautiful old lady. I think I might have killed him already along with the others last night.

I have no time to watch the news, but he must have been in it as all his Missing Person posters are posted everywhere. A couple of people from the search party approached me when I was on my way over to the Home Depot. They asked if I have seen Richard, and I answered "no", as I dare not even look into those faces of the flies after I killed them last night when I flushed them down the toilet for good.

"Where did you go hunting? There must have been a lot of flies in that area!" Paul continues to say. "You should set up some fly-traps too to catch them."

"Do you sell Fly Traps too? I'll take some if you have them," I must have sounded desperate.

"I have some here which you can use for your house, but you can also make some homemade fly traps too with some plastic bottles if you have them in your house," Paul handed me some papers with instructions on the DIY fly traps that I can easily make by myself at home. I also bought some ready-made traps from him.

I bid him farewell, and now I must go to the grocery store to get some bottles of pop and water. With the plastic bottles, I will be able to make some more fly traps by myself. Now, armed with the tent, and the fly traps and all this DIY information, I set off back home.

I am not even aware of what day it is today, and I suddenly remember I have not called in sick to my work for the past two days. My boss must have been looking for me. I definitely need to get in touch with him! I will give him a call when I get home.

The Foreman sounded mad on the phone.

"Henry! Where the hell are you? You have not been in to work for two days and you don't even call me. I thought you were dead! What's happening? We need someone for the cement mixer and you have not been in for two days already! Are you coming in today?"

"Sorry, Boss! I have been very ill for the past two days, and I don't think I will be able to come in today either," I tried explaining as best I could, I don't want to say I had been staying home battling with some flies. That would sound ridiculous!

"How many more days you still think you'll be off? You know I cannot keep your post vacant for too long. I will have to find a replacement worker soon."

"Perhaps in another two days. I really can't come in today. Not just yet. I will call you again the day after tomorrow."

"B-but Henry!..." I hang up the phone before he has the chance to finish. I know, I should be more courteous as he is the Foreman, my immediate boss - one who has the power to fire me if he wants to.

Frankly, I'm not really in the right frame of mind to worry about anything else now, except staring into the open space, wondering where my Marybeth is.

I decide to make a call to Melanie, just to find out if Marybeth has gone to visit her as she has said she would. I just needed to know the truth. A talk with Melanie has confirmed my suspicion. She tells me that Marybeth had never gone to visit her! Not this time, and not the last several times in the last month either.

Then where is Marybeth now? Who is it that Marybeth has gone to see for the past several days? Should I file a Missing Person Report about Marybeth too?

And in the meantime, I really need to deal with all these strange flies. These flies, which seem to be born out of a horror movie, seem unreal, yet, they are here, only attacking me. Why? Tom, who lives next door, seems to have been so quiet. Nothing is bothering him. What's the problem with these dumb flies?

A pesky fly problem can be maddening! Henry is under siege, and I surmise something sinister is going on. Yeah, what's up with all those flies? And, did he finish off Richard?
