Dad owned a small piece of land on which he raised cattle and grew rice. One bright sunny afternoon when I was four years old, our parents took my sister and me out to the family farm for Dad to finish his chores.

He loaded the flatbed trailer with bales of hay to feed the cattle. He hooked the trailer to the tractor and off we all went. My mother, my sister, Ann, and I were riding on the back of a flatbed. Ann and I were absorbed in the thrill of seeing the butterflies fly about and the red hawks flying in circles above our heads. We could hear their cries in the wind. The gentle breeze kept us cool as we rode along on the property. Dad stopped the tractor and my parents went for a walk, leaving my sister and me there on the flatbed alone. We sat on the bales of hay pretending we were queens in a pageant, perched high on our thrones. We acted out the crowning of us as queens and pretended to give commands from our throne. My dad’s mean bull spied the hay and decided to charge quickly toward us. It was his dinnertime and he was not going to let anything deter him from getting the taste of the hay. From a distance, we heard our dad shouting and waving his hands as he frantically ran toward the flatbed. Ann began to scream in loud hysteria. A warning bell must have gone off in me, too, as I heard my dad shouting and saw the bull picking up speed as he ran in our direction. Without any hesitation, I jumped off my throne, picked up a shovel and, as the bull approached, I hit the bull squarely in the front of his head, stunning him for a few seconds. He lost his balance and fell to a sitting position. Dad had time to get to the flat bed and save us from the hungry bull; I was a heroine that day. Hero, in Greek, basically means "one who was born to serve.” My life has been lived in service to others as a conscious choice. My service comes out of the strength of my character that was fine tuned by the experiences that life gave to me. How strange that we are called upon to be all that we can be even from an early age. And even more strange, that we are called to action without the understanding that we have skills, talents, or strength to solve situations that are beyond out experience. Some how, the saving action is summoned from a place that cannot be defined as knowledge and takes form. Whether we continue to grow into our full potential is up to us to embrace. I ask myself everyday, “Am I living this day to my full potential?” If so, I rejoice; if not, I ask myself, “What do I need to do, think, change in order to be all that I can be?”

Jeanne, what a wonderful story and life lesson all wrapped up in one. I was captivated by your description of the field, butterflies, and the red hawks crying on the wind. I could really identify with you and your sister's pretending to be queens. My sister and I used to do things like that, too. I love the way you wrapped the story around a beautiful truth, and so true, we must live every day to the fullest. Much enjoyed!
