A girl with a hidden disability shares her story.
I may look like a typical teenaged girl on the outside, and I may seem to have no problems in life, but looks are deceiving. I seem to be a normal kid in all aspects, but get me in a classroom setting, and right away, people start noticing differences.

I have learning disabilities. I have dyslexia (seeing numbers or letters backwards or mixed up), and I also have problems with math. I have problems with understanding concepts in math, and math has always been difficult and impossible for me. If it were not for my low math grades or my lower scores in English or reading, I would be on the honor roll; but my grades reflect my problems in learning, and at times, it is very embarrassing. I hate having to stand in front of my class and read my reports out loud because chances are, I always end up reading the wrong thing, or I lose my place; and right away, everyone laughs at me. I also hate having to do math because it is so hard, and I have to go to a "Learning Resources" class twice a week, where a teacher tries to help me with my math, so I can understand it better. It doesn't seem to be doing me much good, though: I still have problems with it, so I avoid math like the plague!

At first, I thought my learning problems were caused because of my coming to America from Korea (I was adopted when I was small by the family I still live with now, the Sanduskys), and English was hard; but then, when I went to go to school, I found out that I couldn't read; and by the time I was in second/third grade, I still couldn't read past first grade level, and it was very embarrassing. I also couldn't write that well, and I hated school! But then I was tested, and I was found to have significant learning disabilities; so now I am in a class for students with special needs.

School would be okay if I didn't have to read or do math or write; but I AM doing better than I was. Still, I DO struggle with school at times, and I often need some help to where I can understand it and do it correctly. I also have a "SpellCheck" feature on my computer at home, and that helps me even further.

I am in junior high now, and school is becoming easier as I grow older; but I still get teased at times because of my poor math or reading skills, and I also get teased because I am adopted, and kids sometimes call me a stupid "Ching Chong Chinaman", which makes me mad. First of all, I am NOT a man, and second of all, I was NOT born IN China, not like my twin sisters, Michelle and Megan. I was born in KOREA, and I am KOREAN, not CHINESE!

Living with a disability like mine is frustrating because I have to struggle when other kids seem to breeze through their homework assignments with little or no problems whatsoever, and here I am, struggling my butt off trying to get my work assignments completed on time! It is totally maddening, and I HATE it!
