Louisiana is happy to report that the little girl who had been in a coma since her arrival to Sri Lanka is now waking up.
Day Five, Sri Lanka~

Dear Journal~

I am beyond tired, but I feel I must write, to tell you what happened today. Amid all the sadness and heartbreak, there is room for miracles, and I was here to witness but one small miracle earlier today.

The little girl who had been comatose since my arrival to Sri Lanka is now opening her eyes and is now starting to follow simple commands as directed by the doctors whnever they check on her. She still can't talk, due to the ventilator that is still in her throat, but she follows the doctor's light or fingers with her eyes whenever he checks her eyes, to see how they respond to light or movement, and she moves her limbs upon command; so there appears to be very little in the way of physical or brain involvement. That she survived is truly a miracle, but to see her emerging from a lengthy coma and starting to respond is even more amazing.

The child is tiny and thin: she doesn't appear to be more than three years old at the most. She is very pretty, if you can look beyond the tubing that is attached to her small frame; and she has long, black hair that is caked with grime and dirt, big, black eyes, long lashes, and a small, button nose. She reminds me of my daughter, Ronee', when she was littler; and the resemblance between the two is amazing. They look as though they could be twins!

Maybe once the respirator tube is taken out she will be able to talk; and at long last we will be able to find out her name, her age, and where she is from. But until then, she is our little Nameless Miracle Child, and to see her moving around more on the bed or regarding us with those big, black eyes of hers is enough to cause tears of joy to coarse down our own tired faces. This is something we have been dreaming of, hoping for, ever since we first came here. The child has been unconscious since the tsunami struck; and it is unknown as to whether she lost family members, or how she even got here. But she is now emerging from her lengthy coma; and for now, things are starting to look so much brighter for this little Miracle Child!

Oh, how I wish we had more stories to share such as this one; but alas: there is not much room to celebrate, for as long as there will be miracles, there will also be patients who crash and then code out; and we then have to work like mad to try to bring them back to life. I have seen far too much in the way of death and dying, and it is enough to wear one's soul to despair; but on the other hand, to see a child who didn't have much in the way of ever emerging from her coma suddenly moving around on the bed and following basic and simple commands is nothing short of miraculous!
