Young Marvella Johnson continues to hang on by a thread after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 11 years. The following story is written by her mother, who has hardly left her side.
Oh, God! I don't know if I have the strength to go on much longer...it seems that my daughter is getting worse and worse, and there is very little that the doctors really can do for her...
She just had to have an intercranial pressure device put into her skull, to monitor her brain; her brain started swelling last night, and she was having seizures, and she just came out of surgery. She really looks rough; and it scares me to see that thing in her head. But the nurses and doctors are telling me that this is the best thing for her right now, and if the pressure gets too high inside her brain, they can give her special medications to help lower the pressure (and thus, lower the chances of her having another seizure). She is still in a coma, and she is still clinging to life--but barely so.
I have been keeping my husband informed about Marvie's condition, and I have also been letting her friend Ronee' 's mother, Louisiana, know the latest information regarding her precarious situation. I am so tired and spent I can hardly stand upright, and I can hardly see. I know I must look a sight with my wild hair and my red, bleary eyes, swollen from crying and worry, and my sleep-wrinkled face; but I don't care: I refuse to leave my daughter's bedside, for fear that something will happen to her while I am gone. Yet it is so heartbreaking to see my baby girl lying there, naked, and looking so sick and vulnerable, tubes attached to just about every part of her body. I can hardly see my baby girl for all the tubes surrounding her; yet I try to remain hopeful that some miracle will happen and that she will come out of this. She is still fairly stable ever since they stopped the seizures and had the icmd (intercranial monitoring device) placed into her head, so they could monitor her brain on a continual basis, but she is still very critically ill, and it is still unknown as to just how much disability or damage she suffered when she had her stroke. But at least, for the time being, she is still alive; and that I can be very grateful for!
