The Sormiento family is currently on a cruise to Cozumel and Carmen del Playa, in Mexico, for a week. This is a first in a series of journal entries, done journal-style.
Monday, March 7, 2005, Aboard the Ecstasy cruise ship, on way to Mexico~
Dear Diary~
Well, it's official: we are on ship, heading towards what promises to be a fun and exciting time for our family.
This is Roberto Sormiento. I am currently sitting at the table, on deck of our ship, looking out at the water, as the emmense craft slowly makes its way towards our first destination, which will be Cozumel, Mexico. We are on a week-long cruise, "we" meaning my oldest son, Jubaki, and my wife, M'Buti. As I write this, both mama M'Buti and Jubaki are asleep, in our cabin, while I am sitting here, enjoying the sun and anticipating what lies ahead. We have been planning this cruise for over six months now, and we have been saving for it; now it is about to come true , and I am stoked! :)
My son, who will be seven in June, is excited too; he has always wanted to ride on a big boat, and the boat we are on (the M.S. "Ecstasy") is about the biggest thing I have ever seen in my life! There are restaurants, a casino, two entertainment spots, several shops, and what not on board, and it is almost like a floating city. The sheer enormity of this boat is amazing, and Jubaki will enjoy his time spent here, I am sure. There will be activities geared just for children like Jubaki, and I know he will have the time of his life! But now he is asleep, as is my wife, M'Buti, who isn't feeling too good now. The waves upset her stomach; we hit some big-sized waves, and M'Buti puked so much I was beginning to wonder if she would ever stop. But then I took her to the infirmary, on the lowest level of the ship, and the nurses and doctors on board gave my wife some Dramamine and anti-seasickness patches to wear for the duration of the trip. She still looks a bit green about the gills, and she looks miserable, but at least she is now sleeping soundly. Hopefully, upon her waking up, she will feel somewhat better. I hope so; there is nothing like a little nausea or sickness to ruin an otherwise fun trip!
We left Nashville two days ago, we got into Galveston, Texas, about seven last night; and we spent the night in Galveston, where we then went to the shipyard at noon, to process in for our boarding passes and stuff, and it took upwards up to four hours. At last count, there were over 2,000 people BESIDES us who were joining us for this cruise; so it took a while! When we were finally settled in our cabins, we couldn't believe it, and we were looking forward to a great time, but then, several hours ago, M'Buti started throwing up, and she is now a seasick little Maasai Maiden. But hopefully she will feel better soon; she did take something for her upset tummy, and she does have her seasickness patch on, so that should (HOPEFULLY!) do the trick!
This promises to be a fun time for not only myself, but for Jubaki and M'Buti. I just hope that M'Buti isn't sick the entire duration of the trip! That would be the LAST thing she'd need!

One thing I have learned about cruises, aside from sea sickness, is that you had better diet before you go on one because the food is everywhere on a cruise ship and you can expect to gain a lot of weight if you give in to every tasty morsel they serve. Splendid write
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I wonder...was this inspired by my little jaunt on the high seas? :) If so, you done good. An excellent write.
And yes, these ships are floating cities...JAYS they're HUGE! I thought the M/S Ecstasy was big, until I saw the "GRAND PRINCESS". Now, THAT'S a ship. LOL (Made ours look like a little tugboat.)

Hey! Great diary entry. So sorry to hear about Momma M'Buti getting that awful sea sickness. Been there. Done that. The patches are great, but only if you put them on BEFORE you get sick. Still . . . maybe they will work for her, hope so. Will be on the lookout for more from the Sormiento family's vacation!
