Sheniqua Williams, a victim of Hurricane Katrina, is now in Tennessee, where she is continuing her recovery from injuries and pneumonia; she is grateful just to be alive, even though her world as she knew it has fallen apart.
I am lucky to be alive--VERY lucky. If it had not been for people looking out for my best interest at heart or people looking for survivors in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, a hurricane that demolished my home city of Biloxi, Mississippi, I would have surely died. They found me in the rubble that was once my home--and that was only because they heard weak coughing and moaning issuing from my lips.
But I am NOT dead. I am very much alive--battered, bruised, adn hurtin' for certain to be sure--, and I am staying in Tennessee until I can get back on my feet. I am currently recovering in a hospital (I should be out of the hospital in a week or so, according to the doctors and nurses who are in charge of my care), but when I get out, I will be staying with a woman who happened to take care of me while I was in Mississippi, Louisiana Sandusky and her family, until I recuperate and figure out just what in the blue blazes I am going to do to start over.
I am just wondering if there is anything LEFT of my house, and I wonder if anyone has seen my black-and-white Maine Coon cat, "Furball"--or if she is even ALIVE. I am also wondering if any of my friends were killed (or even hurt) in the hurricane-force winds, and I am wondering if anything that MAY have been damaged is salvageable. In addition, I am wondering what I am going to do for money or how I am going to pay my bills in the coming months.
But someone obviously cared for me because I am still alive, and I will soon be with the nurse who cared for me while I was in Mississippi. It will be a very long and arduous recovery for me and a very big change for me on all levels--physical, emotional, mental, even spiritual--, but I know that with the Lord's help--and the kindness of strangers--I will eventually make it.
Okay. Let's get down to the nitty-gritty here. I had pneumonia real bad, and twice, while on the way to Tennessee, in the Med-Evac helicopter, I apparently stopped breathing and had to be revived (I don't remember that part, but this is what everyone at the hospital has been telling me). I also suffered a serious forearm fracture to my right arm (it now sports this ugly-looking, cage-like thing called an external fixator device, or EFD) and I had cuts and bruises all over my body (these became infected). I was in really bad shape, but now I am finally able to eat again (thank GOD I am rid of that darned old nose hose!!), and they have been working with me with therapy and stuff, and I am just starting to feel halfway like myself again. It will be a while before I am released from the hospital--and it will be even longer than THAT before I can return home to my beloved Mississippi home.
Of course, I am worried about what will happen--that is natural after a disaster of this magnitude--but I AM glad that someone cared enough for me to let me stay with them while I continue my recovery, and best of all, I will live with electricity and air conditioning again!! :)
I just hope and pray that my precious cat, "Furball", is found, and I hope that with all my heart and soul that she is ALIVE----
