Packy's mother raced to the animal shelter where the little black kitten had been taken. Her heart was pounding. She hoped it wasn't too late for the kitten.
Please let the kitten still be alive, she prayed. I've got to get that kitten for my Packy!
She went barging through the heavy oak doors into the lobby. She went to the desk, breathing hard, sweat pouring off of her, even though it was in the twenties outside.
"Do you have a little black kitten that was just brought here?" Packy's mother inquired. "Because if you do, I want to adopt her. Now."
"Hang on," the bored-looking woman said in a bored-sounding voice, as she shuffled through some papers. She then looked up and said, "Yes. As a matter of fact, we do. A tiny six- to- eight- week-old kitten--a solid black one--was just brought in, not even a half hour ago. Do you know anyone who can give it a good home?"
"I'll take her. Her name is 'Jingle Bells'. My son named her. He found her--rather, she found him--; they've been pals ever since," Packy's mother explained, her breath slowing. "We live in an apartment complex that didn't allow people to have pets--excepting for birds or fish--; however, this morning, the rules were changed, and I want to get 'Jingle Bells' for my son."
"Well, as soon as the vets are through examining her and they give us the word that she's healthy, yes, by all means, you can take her", the bored woman at the front desk said, smiling slightly. She was all business as she continued to shuffle through paperwork.
A man in a white coat soon appeared. He had the kitten in his arms. At the sight of the mewling, squirming little black ball of fluff in his arms, Packy's mother's heart leaped for joy. "Good news!" he said. "A clean bill of health for this little furball! She's ready for adoption!"
"Well, this woman wants to adopt her," the lady at the front desk said, smiling fully now. "She wants to adopt it for her little boy."
"Here you go, ma'am," the veterinarian said, handing "Jingle Bells" to Packy's mother, placing her gently into her arms. When the kitten mewed once again, the woman burst into tears of joy. A miracle had just occurred; it overwhelmed her. It sent her faith soaring to record-breaking heights.
Just wait until Packy comes home from school and sees the kitten, she mused. He will be so pleased!!
Oh, what a Christmas this was going to be for Packy--and for her (not to mention, the kitten named "Jingle Bells")! It would be a most unforgettable Christmas!
Little did they know that more miracles were in store for them as Christmas approached, closer and closer.
