Lindsay Maureen Bauer, who has progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), updates us on her life.

April 2009~

Lindsay M. Bauer here.  Thought I'd let you know what's been going on with me.  Know it's been a while; last time I wrote was back in May of last year, almost a year!  Sorry about that!

I still have asthma, but it's better than it was.  I just have to make sure I stay away from strong-smelling perfumes or colognes; that seems to have the worst effect on my breathing.  I'm also allergic to most grasses and trees, so spring, summer, and fall are the worst times for me.

Still with Tracey, my roomie; she and I have a very good relationship:  we're so close we're almost like sisters.  Of course, you have those people who think we're a "fairy" nice couple; lesbian is one thing we're not!!  We're just friends and roommates, nothing more!  Besides, Tracey acts as my caretaker, especially on my bad days, when my PMA is rearin' its ugly head!

I am working five days a week at Nashville Memorial Hospital here in Nashville as a medical assistant; I love it!  It feels so good to be earning money and being able to pay my bills!

I still get some disability, but since I've started working, it's been cut drastically; it wasn't enough to live on, so this is why I work now.  Tracey still works, too; when she isn't taking care of me, she works at a department store, where she is a cashier.

I or Terri don't have what you would really call an "exciting life".  We do go to church on Sundays (also Wednesdays), and we work the rest of the time.  On our days off we sleep or maybe go out to eat or catch a movie if we have some extra green lyin' around.  Most of the time, however, we stay home, where we enjoy each other's company.

I don't know why people have to make assumptions about our life (the gay/lesbian thing); it makes me angry when they think they know it all when they know absolutely nothing about us!  They need to butt their nose out of our business and leave us be!

I don't know how many times people have asked us if we were "a couple".  I try to be Christianlike when I answer their questions, but it's so hard not to get angry at them!  I don't know how many times I've bitten people's heads off!  It's crazy!!

Tracey keeps worrying about me; she's afraid I am going to work myself into an asthma or heart attack.  I may have my health problems, but I'm not THAT fragile!  I'm a lot tougher than I look!!

I can defend myself:  I can either play "whack-a-knee" with my cane, or buzz their toes with my wheelchair!  That usually does the trick!  LOLOLOL

And Tracey, she knows karate, so now you got double-trouble if you mess with us!  Wheee!  LOL

I tried to take karate classes back when I was a kid; never could get the hang of it.  I was used more as the punching bag more than anything else; my sensei was very disappointed in me.

There's no way I could ever take karate now, not with my PMA!  I couldn't defend myself if my life depended on it:  my muscles act more like wet tea bags; I would really do lousy in a threatening situation; that's why I have my cane or my wheelchair; they can do the job just as well!

Well, I gotta go; have to get ready to go to work (work at seven).  I will write in here again soon; hopefully I won't wait a year to do so!  Until then, this is Lindsay Maureen Bauer signing off!  Take care and God bless!  And make sure you don't ask me to partake in any karate tournaments 'cause I'm tellin' you right now, the answer is N-O!!

~Love, your friend, Lindsay Maureen.  :)

I'm so blessed by this story, of Lindsay working and earning for herself, that is the essence of dignity. Thank you for lessons learned here.

Those that are pure of guilt, throw the first stone. It was so long ago, and yet, applies more and more in a today's society with so many quirks.
The world should start to accept that God hasn't done His creation following man's plans or prejudices.

Lindsay has her share of problems and only someone like myself who has asthma can know how it distracts from one's life style. It is a constant that must be dealt with continually. Also, it is admirable when a disabled person uses skills to work and earn a living--even though it limits their disability income. Further, when I was young we always had roommates because it was easier to pay the rent.

I guess in todays world it is hard to know as we know there has always been Gays /Lesbians just not open to the public and it's okay for people to live their lives as they choose, after all God made each of us in the image of himself. It sounds to me that Lindsay and her friend Terri have a wonderful relationship. Thank you for sharing and remember you can't control how other's think.

Newfie Hugs are on the way, Rose
