"Other than not being able to hear, I am just like any other boy."

A little boy who is deaf shares his story.

Image of sunrise (C) 2006, by Karla Dorman.

My name is William Paul Atherton, but most people, they call me Will, as it's easier.  I am eight years old.  I live iwth my family in Menlo Park, New Jersey.

I just recently completed the second grade.  When school starts back up in September, I will be in third grade.  I did very well in school; my family is very proud of me.  I am very proud of me, too! :)

I have two sisters (Maggie and Abigail; they're twelve and ten) and one baby brother (his name is Dalton; he's two).  I also have a dog, "Missy", who acts as my ears.  She helps me, like when the phone rings or the doorbell chimes, because I can't hear them.  She is very smart!

Other than not being able to hear, I am just like any other boy.  I love to jump on the trampoline, play basketball with my friends, play video games or watch tv (our television is closed-captioned), go to church (we go to First Point Baptist Church every Sunday and Wednesday), play baseball or football, and write stories or poems.  I also like to watch the clouds.

I'd like to become a meteorologist when I grow up, but I don't think they have any deaf weather forecasters on the air.  :/

I am a very cute boy.  I have short, spiky brown hair that sticks up all over, big, blue eyes, and freckles dancing on my nose and cheeks.  Some of the girls at school want to be my girlfriend, but I tell them to bug off.  I am too young for that sort of thing; I'm just a kid!

Well, it looks like it's gonna storm, so I'd best get off of here before I get fried by lightning (just saw a nice CG).  I will write in here again soon; until later, this is Will Atherton saying so long!  Take care and God bless!

~Love, your new friend in New Jersey, Will.  :)

Kind of looks like we'll be hearing from the spiky haired, befreckled Will Atherton again. Sounds like a very nice kid.

I love the way you breathe LIFE into your characters, Karen, make them real ... that would be cool, a signing meteorologist! I hope he realizes his dream! Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
