A teenage girl is determined to walk again after becoming paralyzed in an accident. This is her story.

I am determined to take my life back.  I was not meant to sit in a wheelchair, although, at the time being, I have no choice in the matter.

I was badly injured about three months ago; I was struck by a wrong way driver while attempting to cross the street on my way to school.  I suffered a broken back; it was so bad my lower vertebrae were crushed, and I am now permanently paralyzed from the waist on down as a result.

I was angry and bitter at first, but I am not that kind of a person.  I chose to forgive the driver who did this to me.  (Turns out that the woman who had hit me had Parkinson's disease.  She should have not been able to drive.)  I cried lots of bitter trears, but in the long run, as I got the anger out of my system, I felt a lot better.

What is done has been done.  There is really nothing I can do to change my situation (unless God decides me to heal me, which he possibly could, but even if He doesn't heal me, I still plan to do His work, and serve him all of my days.).  I am learning to accept the fact that I am now disabled, but in the future, there may be the possibility of me being able to walk again (with a walker or on a pair of crutches).  Even if there's not a lot of hope in this, there is some, and that is better than nothing at all!

I have been working hard at my therapy.  It isn't easy at times, but I know it is good for me; it will make me stronger, and it may help me reach my goal sooner than I expect.  So I do it, like it or not.  At times I hate it because my body is so sore afterwards.

I am now sitting up more and more (if not in my wheelchair, I sit in a regular chair), and I also go and visit other sick or injured children who are here for one reason or another.  I get such joy in singing Christmas carols for the little ones and reading them the Christmas Story, which talks about why God sent His son, Jesus, as a baby, to earth.  It is really an amazing story, and I never tire of hearing it!

I hope to be able to go home later this week; it would be the best Christmas present ever, not only for me, but for my family.  I miss them terribly when they are not here at the rehabilitation center.  That is what I want for Christmas: to be able to go home and spend Christmas Day with my family.  That would be uber cool!!

Right now, doctors don't know when (or if) I will walk again, but as I said earlier, there's a chance that I might.  So I will work extra hard in my therapy to ensure that this does, indeed, happen.  I want to be able to walk down the aisle next June when I graduate, so I can get my diploma and prove everyone wrong.  I might be on a walker or even crutches, but I will walk again.  You can count on me!

Until that exciting day comes, though, I just have to continue my therapy and keep on trusting, hoping, and believing that I will walk again.  That's all I can do at this point.

*To be continued.*
