Matilda Abrams is worried what her children might think when she finally goes home later today. She lost three of her four limbs to a virulent strain of bacterial meningitis; she is now a triple amputee.

I am so scared I don't know what to do!

I know i should be joyful, but the fact of the matter is this:  I am scared to death!!

I will be going home later today after spending several months in the hospital (and several months here at the rehab facility, where I have been trying to learn to get my life back).  I haven't seen my babies since I got sick with the meningitis that cost me one of my arms and both legs.

I am now a triple amputee.

I can do some things for myself, but as for walking or running, forget it.  No legs.  Kind of hard to get around without legs!  So I'm grounded; if I need to go anywhere, my wheelchair will carry me, or if worse comes to worse, my husband, Bryce, will act as my chauffeur.  I can write, read, get dressed (sort of; need a lot of help there!), do my hair and teeth, and a few other things, but I will need a lot of continuing help/therapies until I become more self sufficient.

I just hope my children won't be disappointed in me because I am half the woman I was.  I am now probably shorter than them (they are ten and fifteen), and it's gonna be damn hard for them to see me, their mother, like this.  I just hope that my appearance won't traumatize them for the rest of their days; it would be the worst thing that could possibly ever happen to me!

Well, I have one more round of therapy in-hospital before the doctors decide to kick me out of this joint, so I have to go.  Then I will be going home!

Home.  What a beautiful word!!  Home never sounded so sweet!!

Today marks the begining of a brand new adventure for me!  Pray I do well; no, pray my CHILDREN do.  They're the ones I am most concerned about!  Thank you in advance; I can use all the prayers I can possibly get!

~Matilda Abrams.

I'm wondering why the kids haven't visited her since she got sick. They're old enough ... mean, NOTHING would be able to keep me from my Mom, if I were them. You know? Still, an excellent story, Karen, well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
