I guess I should have known better than to do something totally stupid or off-the-wall (even for me).
I should have just stayed home.
I don't know what I was thinking when I tried out for the right to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Oklahoma City Chiefs hockey game. Maybe I thought I was another Celine Dion or something, but there was one teeny tiny problem: I am tone deaf.
Let's face it: when I sing, all the dogs in our neighborhood howl (or maybe they were just begging me to stop?!).
Well, I went to the venue with an air of confidence. Maybe I could prove to them that I could suddenly be a diva seemingly overnight. I found out otherwise just how bad I really sang.
After I got done, the judges looked at me, looks of disbelief written on their faces, like they were thinking, "You have GOT to be joking, right??" The looks they were giving me were not looks of praise. It was more like looks of pain or disgust.
I was not happy. If anything, I left with my tail slunk between my legs, feeling nothing but humiliated. I had done it again: acted stupid. I was a loser, a washup. It was beyond embarrassing.
I would probably never hear the end of it when I went back to school on Monday. People would hear of my big audition, and when word got out about how badly I bombed there, they'd never let me live it down. I was sunk.
I love, love, LOVE the title of this story, Karen. A winner! As is the write of total embarrassment. At least this person TRIED. Couldn't do any worse than many others I've heard trying to sing our anthem! Well done.
