A woman copes with the fact that she has multiple sclerosis.
I never dreamed in a million years that I would be diagnosed with something as serious as multiple sclerosis; yet that is exactly what has happened to me.
The symptoms first began innocently enough: nothing more than horrible leg cramps, muscle spasms, weakness and trembling, and so forth; yet when they became more bothersome I had no choice but to go to see my doctor.
The doctor, in kind, suggested that I get some tests done at the hospital; he suspected that something neurological was going on. So that is exactly what I did.
I had spinal taps, MRI's, cat scans, even biopsies done. It was terrifying; I'm just grateful that my friends and my husband were right by my side during this whole ordeal.
Now we could do nothing but wait once the tests were completed, but on the inside, I was shaking-scared. Would it be something like muscular dystrophy, cancer, myesthenia gravis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, or something equally as horrible? It was one of the longest moments of my life.
Eventually the results came back. It turned out I had multiple sclerosis. There could be treatment to lessen the worst of the symptoms; however, I would need to use crutches for walking (or a wheelchair or scooter when I went to places that required a lot of extra walking). It wasn't that good of news, but it could have been a lot worse.
In a way, I was relieved, but at the same time, I was depressed. I went from being an active woman to one who now had a disability that was beyond my control. It was a very hard time, but through it all my family and friends stuck by me, which I greatly appreciated.
It has been six months since that fateful day, and there are days where I still grieve my old life verses the new, but I am slowly, but gradually getting used to "the new normal". I have my bad days as well as the good, and I am slowly learning to take it one day at a time.
