My brother, Johnny, just wrote something, and after I read it on the computer, I thought I had better add MY two cent's worth in!
Ronee' 's my name, and I am 10 years old; but Johnny and I are NOT twins (although I *AM* a twin!). But that's NOT why I am writing!! I am writing about something a lot more serious.
Do you think I love to wake up hurting each and every morning?
Do you think I enjoy walking on crutches or wearing braces on my legs? Do you think I enjoy having the braces rip my pant legs or my socks or my leotards? Do you think I enjoy it when my braces "get hungry" and pinch the SNOT out of my legs?
Do you think I enjoy using a wheelchair at school, only to have others make derogatory comments about me or treat me like I am nothing JUST because I HAPPEN to BE disabled?
Do you think I enjoy watching grown people stare at me or make stupid, inane comments that they have NO business saying in the first place? Don't they know WHEN or HOW to keep their big mouths SHUT or use the brains that the Good Lord GAVE them??
Do you think I enjoy seeing people move away from me like I have a contagious disease or AIDS, just because I "happened" to be standing next to them in line or something?
Do you think I enjoy being told by music people that "I won't make it in country music" because I happen to have a noticeable physical handicap? (Believe me, it's happened; but I have the last laugh on them...I have a CD out of Cajun and country music!) So WHO'S the one who should be LAUGHING, I ask! My handicap is NOT what makes me what I am! I am a PERSON first, and I intend for others to treat me with a little dignity AND respect!
Well, for those who think I may LIKE being disabled, I DON'T like ANY of it!! It's nothing but a BIG hassle, and I DON'T like people making fun of me or any other disabled people!
What would YOU do if it happened to YOU? You CAN become disabled when you least expect it, and it CAN happen to anyone, rich or poor, young or old, black, white, yellow, or tan! Nobody is immune! So THINK before you do, and learn to accept us; because we are EVERYWHERE, and we are NOT going to take this abuse or intolerance ANY LONGER!! We have had ENOUGH!!
heartbreaking, what "different" kids go through...sad...i've said this before, and i'll say it again, kids are curious, and are inquisitive by nature, but they are TAUGHT to fear things (and people) that are "different" than they are. let's reach out and educate children...the way you're doing with this EXCELLENT series!!
