An update on the young African woman who had been shot.
Louisiana Sandusky again. I am here to update you on the young African woman I wrote about earlier. Her name is Pulalay Khelefi, and she is originally from Sudan, in Africa, and is of the Dinka tribe.
I took care of Pulalay when she was in the hospital; and as a result of her injuries she is now a paraplegic, being paralyzed from the waist on down. She is receiving rehab treatment at the Rehab Center area of our hospital, and she is currently undergoing extensive physical, emotional, and occupational therapies. She is learning to walk with the aid of long leg braces and Lofstrand (forearm) crutches, and appears to be doing quite well.
Pulalay is a pretty thing, being extremely tall and exceedingly thin with a model's physique; and she is rather shy and quiet in nature; but she is slowly learning to cope with the trauma of her injuries and paralysis and all the implications that go along with it. She will be staying at the local YWCA when she is released from the Rehab Center, and she will also be undergoing job training in the hopes of finding a job and making a better life for herself here in America.
Whenever I go to the Rehab Center of the hospital, I always make it a point to see Pulalay, and I try to make her feel good about herself by saying how pretty she looks (and she IS) and taking her some books to read; and I also spend time talking with her, just so she can get any feelings she may be experiencing off her chest. I know she is having a hard time emotionally because I see the pain in her dark eyes, and I know she wishes she wasn't in this predicament; but I always try to make her feel better by offering words of encouragement and hope; and we also pray (she prays to her god--she is Muslim--, and I pray to mine; but we do it in a way where no hard feelings are shared; and we try to respect each other's beliefs). She understands that I am a Christian, but she never undermines my beliefs; and she accepts me as a friend. Our friendship is what is most important, not our differences in religions or beliefs.
I do the same with her. It is only fair.
I thought you would like to know how Pulalay is doing because it's been a while since I last wrote about her. I will keep you updated on her progress; so stay tuned!
