New Orleans Memories of Dad getting a moving violation, "Makin Groceries" at Schwegmann's, Tulane v. LSU Football, LSU v. Saban and Alabama.
I'm sure we all have had one or more experience with a traffic ticket.
How can I forget the first time I witnessed my dad getting a ticket on Palmetto near Carrollton Ave in New Orleans when I was about 9 years old?
We were coming back from my dad's routine Schwegmann's "Makin Groceries" at the old store on Labarre and Airline Hwy.
As dad was prepping to take a left onto Palmetto, he gingerly tapped the brakes so as to not take a 100% Stop Sign compliance.
Next thing ya know, some blue lights are flashing and my dad mumbled some words that I usually only heard when LSU beat Tulane, as he was a die-hard Greenie grad.
Dad made sure to implore me always keep a keen eye out for those cops on the prowl - especially "when they were hungry for quota tickets," as he would lament.
Now, as our teenage son preps to drive on his own, I'm still trying to outsmart those invasive red light cameras ....
Go Tulane - even if ya don't play LSU anymore! Can't wait to attend a home game at the campus stadium hopefully ready next year. Maybe Montana can take them to the BCS against LSU; move out the way Saban!
I never heard the term, "makin groceries." A coworker with a large family always joked that he was going to "get bred [bread]" on the way home from work.
I was never riding with my dad when he got his tickets. I was riding, standing behind him in the back seat, when he rolled our car when I was about six. When we were nine, my dad let us drive is brand-new 54 Ford stick shift in the hayfield, alone. We didn't get a ticket, but my grandfather chastised my dad vehemently for letting, "Those kids drive!"
