Getting Lost in a Mardi Gras Parade as a Kid; taking a Motorcycle Ride with a Policeman to find Parents. No wonder I like Motorcycles!
As we are now in the "throws of Mardi Gras," (I still have some treasured early Rex Doubloons in hiding!), I can't help but recall a childhood memory from the Mid-City Parade in N'Awlins.
My late mother has a Kleinpeter family heritage, so as a kid, we would always go to where she grew up as a child . the former Klienpeter Home/Grocery Store on S. Jefferson Davis Pkwy. and Bienville St., for the Mid-City Parade, known for the many great bands on display.
Well on one of those occasions as a 7 year old 'Yat, i wondered off from my parents to get a rolling doubloon and got lost after befriending some other boys, who were negotiating trades on their catches.
After wandering a bit, a policeman on a motorcycle saw this crying lad and assured me he would help me find my parents and cleverly distracted me by carefully positioning me in front of him on his bike and promising to take me to get an ice cream cone.
So I felt like i was a King in the parade as we rode down on his motorcycle in the parade with a vanilla ice cream cone in my hand ... and my Mom was so excited when she saw me, as I was, until I heard her call my name in the way that I knew I was in trouble - with my middle name included: "Keith JOHN Horcasitas (before i also added Paul for Confirmation!), where have you been!!!
Hey, I can relate to Jesus from when Mary and Joseph ragged on Him when He was found in the temple after being lost for 3 days!
Suffice it to say that after I had joined Mom and Dad, whom had profusely thanked the Policeman, my backside caught some "Mardi Gras Throws," ... the kind you don't trade ... and I would never trade, as i had learned a good lesson in the "'Mardi Gras Mambo' of Life ...."
That was quite an adventure! You were very fortunate that that policeman found you. And I think that your love motorcycles probably started when you had that ride with him. By the time I was seven, I was pretty streetwise and don't think that I would have cried when getting lost in the crowd.
I do remember, when I was about four. My twin brother were following our mother's skirt in JCPenney's (a huge store to a four-year-old) when the woman turned around and it wasn't our mother! We started crying and mom came to the rescue. We did get spanked for being bad though.
