Lately, some Contributors to Smiley Anders Column in The Advocate have been addressing "Dry Heat," so I'll address how us New Orleans Native 'Yats dealt every Summer with "Wet (High Humidity) Heat!"
Recently, I bought some delicious "Blue Bunny" Ice Cream, and Maria, my better-half, said that Blue Bunny reminded her of Pontchartrain Beach "Soft Serve Ice Cream!"
Pontchartrain Beach was a neat hangout by the Lakefront where folks went to "beat the wet heat" with that Soft Serve Ice Cream and enjoyed some amusement rides like the famous Zephyr and The Wild Mouse.
Before Pontchartrain Beach closed on September 23, 1983, Maria and I went there that Summer on our July 30 Wedding Anniversary, and we donned our Hawaiian honeymoon apparel (Hawaiian Shirt / Dress).
And we had spent our honeymoon first at the Hotel Villa Convento (formerly an Ursuline Convent - so we spent our honeymoon at a Convent!) in the French Quarter, we then went to Hawaii and really enjoyed some "Dry Heat" and “Tiny Bubbles” serenading by Don Ho!
I've always loved the heat and humidity here in Houston. But I guess it's because I've never had that extra layer of fat that most people have that makes it hard for me to deal with even "chilly" weather. But I'm certainly glad I have air conditioning or I wouldn't sleep well most nights from April to November.
We have the same "dry heat" that you have. But ours are reaching drought conditions. Watering our small garden and yard is getting quite expensive, but it's the only way to keep our plants alive that are not native through these, sometimes month-long spells without rain in summer. And then we are relieved by a tropical wave that dumps way too much water like a hurricane Harvey did with 42 inches in two days at my house a mere three years ago.
It is interesting how things like air conditioning and freeways, airplanes, changed seasonal living styles, the retreats they went to in summer, the beaches and amusement parks they frequented. When they lose favor, they go into decline.
