I think I was fifteen years old and had recently moved from Akron, Ohio to Southern California when I heard the news report on the radio.A man had been arrested for running around a church while naked.As I recall, it took the police about a half hour to catch him.“Probably a bunch of fat cops,” I thought to myself.
This incident occurred back in 1961 as close as I can remember, long before the “streaking” craze hit the college campuses, shopping malls and sporting events.
The man was hauled into court on charges of indecent exposure and evading arrest and when asked by the judge why he was compelled to behave in such a manner, he replied, “Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.”
I puzzled over this for days, trying to fathom the mentality of a person who would perceive nudity on hallowed ground as a good idea.
It has taken me a lifetime of experience, but today, I understand.
