Time slowed down and Joe started to relax. Suddenly, he put both of his hands around Natasha’s folded hands. Her eyes widened and the blue in them turned cold.
It was getting late and colder. Joe asked her if she wanted to grab something to eat. “Yes Joseph I’m hungry.” The place he wanted to eat at had just closed and it looked like nothing else was open. As they were walking away he noticed a tiny pub across the street that looked open. They hurried in and found table. After hours of walking in the cold, the air in the pub felt thick and warm. The table was small and they were facing each other no more than an arm’s length away. Natasha began talking again and Joe could sense she felt more comfortable. The conversation slowed down to eventual silence.
Joe and Natasha were forced to sit there and stare each other. So that’s what they did. Time slowed down and Joe started to relax. Suddenly, he put both of his hands around Natasha’s folded hands. Her eyes widened and the blue in them turned cold. Sensing this was a mistake Joe pulled his hands away. Natasha gently pulled his hands back over hers. They sat there looking into each other’s eyes with no words spoken. It was in these uncomfortable moments between a man and a woman, still strangers and totally vulnerable to each other that Joe treasured the most. He realized it would never get any better between them. Combined, they had more issues than a charter member of sports illustrated. But Joe didn’t care; it was enough for him just being there, with her, sharing this moment.
The pub was closing and it was time to go. When they went outside it was even colder than before. Joe put on his old worn-out coat and Natasha said “Stay close to me Joseph” as she put on “The White Parka.”
