How to Organize Society From Top to Bottom
Chapter 16

Well in Henry George’s view the single tax would cure most of the ills that beset capitalism while conserving it. This is where he differs from Communism, Marxism and Socialism. His motto is to tax the rich absentee landlords while preserving and helping the middle class and the poor to thrive.

For example, a middle class person would not have their home taxed, it is the absent landlords in places like NYC that would have their vacant lots and tall buildings taxed.

Most of the 7% percent of NYC real estate is actually Russian, speculators and foreign oligarchs who don’t actually live there.
A single tax or a 7 percent tax in Weyl’s view would go long way toward reducing inequality, keeping capitalism intact for the poor and the middle class while administering a single tax, easy to collect while having proceeds go back to the public where the rents can repay the public for its expenses.

Again, who reimburses the public for oil spills, for hurricane damage, for climate change?
Now we, the public, do this but have no means of recovering the costs of doing such.
The single tax is a means of doing this.

Who reimburses the costs of roads, of poverty, of research and development. These are payed out by the government but governmental entities have no means of recovering those costs.

A single tax works.

So we have basically two threads: one is the 7% tax and the single tax. One for sees the end of private property that does not benefit the public, the other envisions retaining private property but taxing it to meet public needs.

Which is best?
We shall have a look next time.

Using taxation is probably the best way to control the movement of capital from the working people to the landed landlords.

But there is inherent danger in capitalism if we are not careful. Maximizing profit while creating more consumption through cheaper goods and services leads to people buying and/or using far more than they need. We seem to have an unlimited capacity for "stuff." As world population grows and as income per capita grows, the more stuff we acquire, the more we scavenge from the land and pollute the environment. We are dirtying our own nest more rapidly every year.

I am somewhat optimistic that we will come to our senses at some point and reverse our destructive tendencies but the impact on the weather and ecosystems worldwide is already being observed rapidly declining. There are those that believe we can continue to consume unlimited resources, but we must do that in outer space and not on the earth.
