It was dark, pitch black and silent. Ulric lay still. He couldn’t do much else. All around him were things: some hard, some soft, some big, some small. If he’d let it, fear would have swamped him, but all this had happened before. Sooner or later it would end – he hoped.

Cursing, he blamed himself. Should have taken more notice. Should have eye-balled everything before the darkness came. Stupid to forget my training.

For a second, he sensed movement, a strange vibration. It could be something or nothing. What he couldn’t do was panic. If he panicked that would be the end. He’d never be able to look his enemies in the eyes – and he had enemies. For all he knew some were waiting unseen in the dark. If they were, he’d have to be quick when the light came back – if it came back.

Whatever the vibrations, they stopped. Black normality returned, but Ulric had his distraction. He was reliving the last time he’d clashed with Kaito, his greatest enemy. It had been some fight. His body still bore the scars, but then so did his oriental nemeses’. Ulric suddenly recalled falling, slicing through the air at breakneck speed as if not even the ground could stop him.

The grim memory alarmed him. It was crystal clear yet frustratingly hazy. Had it happened before his fracas with Kaito or afterwards? He couldn’t be sure, and uncertainty was the last thing he needed. Heroes don’t have uncertainties, he reminded himself, none that show leastwise.

He would have laughed but somehow he couldn’t. He was a hero. No doubt about that, and he was famous. Masses of stuff had been written about him. There’d even been a film. So how had his present predicament come about?

Stiffly unmoving, he pondered the unthinkable. Maybe Kaito had won. Maybe the fall had been the fall to end all falls. Maybe it had killed him. Maybe he was in his coffin and there’d be no light coming back, ever; just the endless darkness of the grave. Nonsense, he rebuked himself. Kaito never wins – not the war. He may fluke the odd battle but good always conquers evil in the end, and I’m good.

This time there was no mistaking it – and it was far more than mere vibrations. Ulric’s whole world was violently shaking. That’s what it felt like. Within his cocoon of darkness he was tossed about like a small-scale yacht in the midst of a mighty hurricane. Everything about him was thrown every which way, Ulric himself pounded by the unseen until he felt battered and nauseous. The tumult seemed to last for ever and there was still no light. Despair crept towards him but his resolve was stronger. No matter what, he wouldn’t be defeated. Kaito or no Kaito, he wouldn’t be taken alive. Never would he give away the secrets locked in his head. Too many lives were at stake.

When is came, the light virtually blinded him. Unable to see or move, he steeled himself for the attack he felt sure his enemies would launch. Almost at once he was seized and helter-skeltered skywards like a helpless plaything. The game had begun. Soon Kaito too would be snatched from the toy box.

Well-developed suspense and a cool landing twist. Kids do get rough with their toys. ;-)
