Fan mail is nice to have.
My publisher sent me a fan mail this week. Here is what it said: "I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Sartor's writing. The story moved fast and held a great deal of meaning to me. I will be watching for her next novel to guide my imagination on another riveting adventure."
I have 34 glowing reviews of BONES ALONG THE HILL on Amazon and another seven on B&N, but this is my first piece of fan mail. I was delighted to have it and even more delighted that the novel meant something to the writer. The writer was male, judging from the name, which means even more since men generally eschew anything that smacks of romance.
Getting a novel noticed takes herculean work, at least for most of us. There are those lucky few who throw a book against the wall and suddenly become million-sellers. Most of us, however, promote and advertise and give out cards and bother all sorts of people with talk about our novels.
If you've read a book lately and enjoyed it, do the author a favor. Go back to the web page where you bought the thing and do a review. You can't give a better gift to us.
Thirty-four reviews is quite an accomplishment. And to have a man write glowingly to you about your romance novel is a good indication that your book reaches more than womanly sensibilities.
I agree with you about reviews. If I read someone's work and can give them a good review, I always write one and make sure that I post it on all (not just monopolistic Amazon) the places where the work is sold. As authors, we need to do that for one another because it does make a difference. If I can't write good review, I usually contact the author directly and tell them why. There are so many POD publishers that take the money and don't care about the quality of the work.
I will write a bad review for any book that is hateful or misuses facts.
