The author and her husband have trouble remember the names of flowers that begin with the letter "p".
If my husband doesn’t know what kind of flower he sees, he calls it a posy. I suppose that works for him, except that, now, I’m pretty confused about several species, myself. So, I decided to do a little research.
As it turns out, a posy isn’t a flower, at all, but rather, something akin to a nosegay, that arrangement of flowers, which a bride carries down the aisle on her wedding day. It’s also known as a tussie-mussie. Heaven only knows where that name came from. It’s either a new term since I got married or else it has resurfaced since then.
I thought the kind of flowers we have put in what was supposed to have been my husband’s vegetable garden was a peony. Just now, while doing my research, I learned that I’m wrong. A peony looks entirely different from the medium-sized red blossom that is starting to take root outside my office window.
Still more research revealed the fact that the flowers in our bed are, in fact, petunias. How ‘bout that! All three begin with the letter “p”. Do you think we have a mental block to summer annuals that begin with the letter “p”?
