My sister and I used to work out at the airport - Dallas/Ft.Worth International Airport. We had some wild and crazy times!!!!
My Senior year of High School, WAY back in 1987, my Sister and I worked for "Paradies Gift Shops" out at the airport-Dallas/Ft.Worth (D/FW International Airport). It was a pretty big airport back then. So, you can imagine how BIG it is now!
One time, I went to go and watch the planes land and drove on the side roads around the airport. All people who worked at the airport knew about the side roads. Well, I THOUGHT I knew my way around the airport - I was WRONG! I had gotten off work at 10pm and took the airtrans back to the parking lot. The airtrans was a really SLOW moving vehicle that ran on powerlines but the power was at hip level. One had to be careful. It was not handicapped equipped or anything. I am handicapped so I ought to know. In times today, it is a little better equipped. Anyway, I got into my truck and was driving on the frontage road on the North End of the Airport. I pulled over and just left my lower lights on. I stayed for about thirty minutes. The planes are mesmerizing to watch come in and land. After 11pm, the planes stopped landing because of a noise ordinance. The planes begin the next day of take-off and arrival starting at 5am - 6am.
I suppose I was not looking where I parked the truck. I put the truck in gear and slowly took off. The truck suddenly went down in front and the tail of the truck went up into the air! I instinctively went up into the corner of the cab and opened up the cab windows and crawled out! I had run directly into a ditch! This was NOT a small ditch, however. It was a BIG Culvert type ditch for rainwater! Mom was NOT going to like this!!! A passerby stopped and asked if I was OK. I was pretty shook up and they called an ambulance. I had them call Mom. Mom's first thoughts were - "Why are they calling me if she just ran into a ditch? Cannot she get out and drive home?" So, she got dressed and came and got me. She was pissed! However, when she saw the truck nose down in the ditch; she changed her thinking and told me what she HAD been thinking and all! It is a night we shall never forget! More stories about the airport to come!!!!
Becca, that's a great story...truly enjoyed. I too have put a car in a ditch and this will truly amuse you. Years ago, way back before tight security, during the summer friends and I would go out to Los Angeles International and sit on the observation decks that were set up to watch airplanes come in and take-off. Yours is a great story.
