I was awakened by the shrillness of the alarm clock; another workday ahead of me.
Not being an early-morning person, it was always a chore to get up and make coffee for my husband, then put on a kettle of water for my tea.
The floor-to-ceiling bay windows in our kitchen allows for the day to greet me, and for me to view the world outside. This particular morning I was casually trying to view new blooms in our back garden; blooms that I find inspiring
to face the day ahead.
What surprise was I in for this day? What is this that trespasses into our yard? A cat: a black cat, all scraggly and worn. So thin you could see bones protruding; so in need of food.
I had to think this cat is smart! It knew where the ‘softies’ lived, and that there was food to be had. Our previous 15-year-old cat had recently died, and, for some reason we had kept the remaining cat food. Oh, yes…this new cat was smart!
Before readying myself for work, I quickly put out food and water for the new arrival, while letting it know it would have to stay outdoors. That day I must have called my husband three or four times to see if ‘cat’ was staying around. Of course it was.
Days, and then a few weeks went by…my feeding the cat morn and night. Then, one early morning, I realized this cat was getting fat…much too fat. And not from just food! Oh, dear! This cat was
a ‘she’ and she was pregnant! Guess we’ll have to ‘up’ her rations.
Within three weeks, towards the end of my work-day, my husband called me.
“You won’t believe what I’m looking at” were his first words. Now what?, I thought.
“Ok, John…what are you looking at?”
“We (emphasis on the ‘we’) have two beautiful, little kittens”, he further informed me. “John, all kittens are ‘little’, and usually ‘beautiful’”, I replied.
Shortly after that call came another. “Hey, we have three kittens,
now”, he tells me.
“Where are the kittens, John?” I asked. “Right here!” says he.
“Yes, but where is “here”?” was my next question.
“Well, I got a box for them and put the momma and kittens in that”,
he then told me. “I’ll be home in a few minutes…no more calls,
please”
Why is it that traffic is always so congested when we are in a hurry?
When I finally reached home, I found John and the box in our office
area. There was ‘momma’, and not three, not four, but FIVE kittens.
Five of the most beautiful, adorable, sweetest, little babies you ever
saw. What a joyful sight to behold!
The first time I saw our new family was both exciting and
heart rendering; my heartstrings had definitely been ‘tugged’.
Our Momma, who is solid black with a white tip on her tail, had
given us two black kittens (PoohPooh and PoohToo) and three
gray tabbies with the tiger stripes (Li’l Tooter, ChiChi Girl [with
beige-tipped tail], and Race Horse [with white chest, four white
paws, and white-tipped tail]).
Oh, dear…and all are lying on one of my best, fluffiest bath-towels!
Oh, well…they’re worth it. And have been more than “worth it” these
nearly nine years! My faithful companions…my Momma and Babies.
I’ll never forget the “first time ever I saw their face(s)”.
Micke this is wonderful! I remember once you mentioning their names and I thought it so inventive of you, they are such great names!Truly delightful story!
