It's hard to be the last man on Earth. It could be less so, would there be a last woman on Earth.
Arnold sat near the table and looked at the spider web near the wall. A fly entered it and tried to fly off. A big spider closed quickly and began to roll the fly in a silky sticky thread. Being the only human, Arnold now felt trapped like this fly. Every day he did the same things, never waiting for something unexpected to happen.
He was so concentrated in his thought that he didn't hear a knock on the door. He turned his head only when the door creaked.
"Folter, my friend. Please enter." Arnold waved with his hand to emphasize his words.
"Mr. Herling, you have to come with me. And can I clean this web, please?"
"Leave my home as it is!"
"Sorry, Sir."
They walked to the central building, everybody greeting them. A car passed by and sprayed Arnold's trousers with water from a puddle remaining after the rain. The driver saw it, stopped the car immediately and ran to wipe the trousers. Arnold patiently waited while the driver tried to clean water stains all the time asking to be forgiven. But after three minutes he got bored and said, "Enough."
The driver stood up and asked: "What is enough Mr Herling? Wiping your trousers or asking to be pardoned?"
"Both. I have to continue."
The rest of the way was eventless. They entered the building and went straight into the amphitheater. Folter ran to bring a big chair and put in in the center of the stage. Arnold sat and waited.
Slowly, the place got filled, until Folter announced: " The day 2753 of the new Era of the Last man. Works proceedings begin." He gave Arnold a heavy book, opened on the right page and bowed.
Arnold took his glasses from the pocket and began to read:
"Today's works will be distributed in this way: Tul5 will sweep the Second street, left side ; Tul7 will sweep the Fourth street, right side…"
Six hours it took to read all the tasks. Only then Arnold said : "Now go and do what I told you." The second those words left his lips, everybody ran to work.
Arnold always thought it was funny that though others prepared the list, only his commands could make everybody work. But that was the reality. Not only he could give orders. But only his orders each robot had to obey. Without their works, robots would rust and die. They were like children - you had to say them what to do or they would go in rounds doing nothing. It was up to Arnold to keep the robotic society alive.
Being the last man on Earth is really a very hard work.
2753 and still the earth will hold water? My God! man learned?
