Writing is in my blood. My first published article, a letter to the editor about a rash of neighborhood break ins, appeared in our local newspaper while I was still in high school. After editing our college newspaper, I paid my dues stringing for a big city paper as soon as I graduated.
Now I am a seasoned professional with many years reporting news and writing features. While I enjoy a variety of topics and get a kick out of throwing the spotlight on a local success story, my passion is true crime. I could care less about car thefts or bar brawls but thrive on major crimes, like grand theft, rape and murder, particularly unsolved murders. I once wrote an award-winning series on different cold cases which generated interest and leads as well as a good relationship with the police.
I go out of my way to nurture my relationship with members of law enforcement. Even when I am covering an active investigation, I’m always careful to get the cops’ side of the story and present them in as favorable a light as possible. As a trusted member of the press, I am often privy to unpublished details.
Of course, covering active murder investigations, solved crimes and cold cases has given me a good knowledge of what mistakes lead to an arrest and conviction as well as what steps lead to literally getting away with murder.
My favorite pastime is taking advantage of this knowledge by meticulously fantasizing the perfect murder. I spend hours choosing the victim and location, deciding on the MO, executing the crime, and then joining the investigation. Most of my daydreams end up on the drawing room floor. But some of them become published murder mysteries which have gained a small, but respectable audience on amazon. And occasionally I turn my schemes into a live action drama and off someone. How do I decide who to kill in print and who to kill in the real world? It’s easy really. I simply toss a coin.
